From the "Continuum of Knowledge." Second, generating the Samadhi of Shamatha-Vipashyana based on the ground of beings with middling faculties who have an object of support: If wisdom is not generated through the aforementioned methods, then relying on an object of support means that from refuge onwards, up to the three self-natures, it is the same as before. The difference is that directly in front of one's eyes (126), place a yellow mound built of earth, or a piece of wood, or a small stone, or anything else, and look at it without moving the gaze of the eyes. Do not make any examination or analysis of the texture or color, etc. Cut off the mind's scattering and gathering of conceptual thoughts, and continuously engage in meditation. Occasionally, allow them to adjust their posture and see if it works. Ask if the object in front of their eyes is clear or not. If they say, "It always appears clearly," then this is still conceptual thought operating in the background, so diligently cut it off without distraction. Also, ask if the object in front of their eyes sometimes disappears. If they say, "It appears when mindfulness grasps it," then it doesn't matter if it disappears. There is no need to deliberately grasp it with mindfulness. If it is gone, leave it as gone and meditate. Also, ask if they say, "It disappears when mindfulness grasps it," then ask if there is any appearance (127) after it disappears. If they say, "The eyes feel blurry and flickering, oily and heavy, or see flashes of light, etc.," then look at that without artifice. Relax without grasping and leave it at that. Do not label it as good or bad or what it is. Strive to increase the experience. In this way, a flawless Samadhi of Shamatha-Vipashyana will arise in the continuum. Third, generating the Samadhi of Shamatha based on the path of gradual stages for beings with inferior faculties: If you have the aforementioned beings with superior and middling faculties continuously meditate, even if they recognize that the mind is somewhat stable, they are still influenced by sinking, excitement, and conceptual thoughts. To counteract this, first practice looking to the right: slightly shift the object of focus to the right side and meditate and look as before. After a session that is not too short, again look at the object of focus in the center (128) and have them meditate. Second, practice looking to the left: slightly shift the object of focus to the left side and look. Then alternately look at the center, looking and having them meditate in this way.

Third, practicing with nearness: Place the object of visual consciousness closer than before, and then begin meditating as before. Fourth, practicing with distance: Look at objects such as the mountains in front and begin meditating. These objects, even if they slightly conflict with the three natural states, are also revealed as skillful means for sharpening the abilities of those with keen faculties, and as instructions for sustaining practice for those who are dull. Fifth, practicing with the sky: If dullness, sleepiness, etc., occur, look upwards at the sky, the top of a mountain, or the edge of the roof in front, etc., raising the gaze, and invigorate the consciousness, and then remain as before (129). By doing so, the fault of dullness will be purified, and a clear and non-conceptual samadhi will arise. Sixth, practicing with lowness: If the consciousness is agitated and thoughts are scattered, based on the previous three natural states, look downwards at the bottom of a valley, the lower room of a house, or the ground in front, lowering the gaze, relax the consciousness, seek openness in the mind, and meditate. By doing so, agitation will be pacified, and the samadhi of calm abiding will be properly established. For these, first, like the blinking of an eye, relax in the state of clarity and emptiness without grasping, and during breaks between sessions, recognize that "my preliminary practice has naturally arisen," and then again remain in the natural state. These two are also instructions for eliminating the obstacles of dullness and agitation. Seventh, mixing with various activities: Not only during the time of meditative equipoise, but also when naturally arising from that state (130), and when urinating or defecating, even if you have not circled seven times with thread, avoid feeling ashamed and all disturbing thoughts. As the Sambhuti Tantra says: "When eating, drinking, and pouring, sleeping, turning, and thinking, if you desire to realize Mahamudra, then these should be done beforehand." The Compendium says: "Walking, standing, sleeping, and sitting, be fully endowed with mindfulness. Like looking at a yoke, do not let the mind wander while walking." In short, during all times of speaking, reciting sutras, chanting mantras, listening to and explaining Dharma, etc., remain in the state of clarity and emptiness without grasping, without deviating from that natural state. Also, for some, because the power of meditative equipoise is weak, if they do not mix it with reciting sutras and mantras, etc. (131), their minds become very dull while reciting sutras and mantras, so they should recite. After reciting, return to the natural state.
