Because it abides in the middle, it is said. The body should be arranged in the seven-fold posture of Vairocana: without tilting forward, backward, right, or left, the body should be straight and upright. In that straight state, do not put pressure on the four fishes and four channels, but relax naturally. Let go as if the Sokpon rope has been cut. Needless to say, worldly activities such as walking, sitting, and lying down should be abandoned. Even religious activities such as prostrations and circumambulations should be temporarily abandoned. Letting the body relax and rest without any effort is the natural state of the body. Second, the natural state of speech: the lips are without effort and devoid of speech, this is the natural state of speech. It is said that worldly lies and slanders are needless to mention. Reciting sutras and mantras, meditating on the arising and dissolving of winds, etc., should also be abandoned. (121) The tongue should be placed against the palate, with a slight gap between the teeth. The lips should be neither open nor closed, and speech should be silent, letting go and resting without effort is the natural state of speech. Third, the natural state of mind: the mind is free from the desire to meditate on the gaze of the eyes, this is the natural state of mind. It is said that one should not follow after the past, nor welcome the future. The present mind should be without effort, relaxing in a state without grasping or rejecting thoughts of the three times, free from the thought of wanting to meditate on the gaze of the eyes. Do not even have the thought of "I am meditating on the preliminaries," but be blank and dull, without effort, this is the natural state of mind. The phrase "without departing from the gaze of an elephant" means that just as an elephant is drunk with alcohol, it does not cling to anything, and without denial or affirmation, its eyes do not blink, but it remains blankly. Here too, the (122) eyeballs should not move to the left or right, front or back, and without clinging to anything, be blank, not relying on anything, but dull. In a state free from the conceptual thoughts of wanting to meditate, relax effortlessly on top of the three natural states. Completely let go without clinging to anything, and rest without fabrication, this is the first object of focus. The way it is, the wisdom dakini Niguma said, "Like a god arousing desire." This is the meaning. The great Brahmin said, "The eyes do not close, the mind rests as it pleases, the yogi who does not meditate on meditation." Sukhasiddhi said: Awareness

Yogis, rest in non-reliance! Thus it is said. Also, as stated in the Mother Tantra: Bodhisattvas, great beings who wish to view with the gaze of an elephant, should train in the Perfection of Wisdom. Thus, all Sutras, Tantras, treatises, and instructions unanimously declare, therefore, abandon doubt and hesitation regarding the profound essence, and meditate with one-pointedness. Thus, the posture and gaze are special methods; remaining in this, the root channels do not waver; remaining in this, the supporting winds do not waver; thereby, the pure elements that rely on this do not waver; thereby, the mind that relies on this is grasped without wavering. Thus, if, by meditating with one-pointedness, the faults of dullness and lack of clarity, or agitation and instability, arise, then generate renunciation of samsara, and supplicate the Lama intensely as before, and by meditating in this way, the mind will arise resting in the state free from elaboration. The wisdom dakini Niguma (༡༢༤) said: The stages of the five paths and ten bhumis, are traversed by the power of devotion. Not separating from the appearance of the Lama, is the supreme essence of the Tantric teachings. This is the meaning of that. In such a state, like being stunned as if attachment to a deity has arisen, this is the measure of the first preliminary practice, and is also called ordinary awareness. The Great Brahmin said: Ordinary awareness awakens in the center of the heart. When the six aggregates are purified, bliss is continuous and uninterrupted. Thus it is said. It is also called the first mind, as stated in the Praise of Names: Buddhas have no beginning or end. The first Buddha is without cause. Thus and so forth it is said. Such a preliminary practice arises in all sentient beings during times of interruption and rest, but because it is not recognized, they wander in samsara. Now, having recognized it at all times, whether eating tsampa or whatever comes to hand, such as a mala, rest in that state of being stunned with the gaze of an elephant. Thus, if one possesses the means to generate a flawless samadhi of calm abiding, then from that, various appearances of insight wisdom will arise, so abandon joy and sorrow, and engage in cultivating it without distraction. This arises only from the kindness of a genuine Lama. Those who merely appear to be Lamas lead only to wrong paths, because they have not cultivated wisdom themselves and do not recognize
