What were the fruits of those holy beings? What were the results of their maturation? The Blessed One said: (112) Those gods not only regarded them as holy beings, but also as fully and perfectly enlightened Buddhas. For the sake of those gods, after going to other worlds, they caused the sentient beings born in the great hells such as the Avici hell to abandon various sufferings, to rely on Bodhi without being devoured by demons, and to firmly establish them in irreversibility for the sake of Bodhicitta. Thus, and so on. Some who do not understand this say that the Lama is only the door for requesting oral instructions, and that accomplishments and blessings, etc., arise from the Yidam deity who is better than the Lama. If that were the case, the accomplishment would be delayed. Some rely on the Lama for a long time, but without respect. They do not contemplate the Lama's virtues, but only contemplate faults. How could virtues arise in the mind-stream of such a (113) person? Therefore, the way to rely on the Lama properly is: for the sake of the benefits of this life and a little wealth, one also prostrates to the lord, rises early, acts as a messenger, acts as a soldier, etc. With the mouth, one praises, speaks grandly, flatters, and jokes. In the mind, one thinks, "He is high, he wins, he enjoys much, he has many attendants." When meeting, one is even willing to give up body and life for him. The Lama is very different from this, because the Lama is said to be the source of all temporary and ultimate virtues. Therefore, one must serve and offer with all possessions such as body and wealth. As it is said in the Shri Paramadya Tantra: In the three sessions, one should abide in perfect equanimity. The mouth, hands, and feet should be washed. Taking flowers, in front of the Lama, (114) one should make the mandala of the Buddhas, perfectly round. Thus, it is said to offer mandalas, etc., in the three sessions. In the Guhyasamaja Five Stages it is said: Having abandoned all offerings, one should greatly make offerings to the Lama. By pleasing him, one will attain the wisdom state of omniscient knowledge. Thus, offering to the Lama is praised as supreme. In the Fifty Verses on the Guru it is said: Whatever is slightly pleasing and inexhaustible of desires.
