This is the difference in giving. Because of prior examination, these are explained as analytical meditation, but in the end, they must necessarily fall into settling meditation, because they also require settling without correcting the mind. Nowadays, some people regard settling without correcting the mind as an enemy, and make their own meditation stages very profound, seeming to proclaim emptiness, selflessness, and non-true existence. Like this (558), it is impossible to proceed on the noble path. In the *Compendium of the Perfection of Wisdom*, it says: 'Although one thinks this aggregate is empty, the bodhisattva does not dwell on characteristics and does not believe in the unborn.' And so on, extensively explained. This is turning the path upside down. The two, analytical meditation and settling meditation, also depend on the faculties of the trainees and are taught in accordance with their intelligence. It is not absolutely necessary to have analytical meditation before settling meditation. If that were the case, how could it be reasonable that a disciple of the noble Nagarjuna, a cowherd who did not even know the alphabet, was liberated by being taught profound yoga? Therefore, to explain the two, analytical meditation and settling meditation, with an analogy: Some people have blurred vision due to wind, bile, and phlegm, and see the suffering of perceiving hairs, flames, cliffs, and so on (559). Relatives will proclaim, 'There are none of those things in this place.' Such a reasoned proclamation can also slightly reduce fear. Some wise people, without making such a proclamation, skillfully feed them good eye medicine, and that person will directly realize that hairs and so on do not exist. Similarly, seeing that sentient beings have been suffering from the concept of self since beginningless time, many wise people, like relatives, speak of selflessness with hundreds of thousands of reasons, and then the afflictions gradually decrease. But for those who are more skilled than this, the concept of self is seen as arising because the mind has been dominated by the transformation of wind and elements since beginningless time (560). Therefore, giving the eye medicine of non-conceptualizing inner awareness, the person who receives the eye medicine

That itself makes selflessness manifest. This is called (manifesting selflessness). Thus, this path of inference that approximates the realization of selflessness is also taught by the great chariot masters. Just as the path of direct perception, which is widely known and spoken of in Jambudvipa (the Indian subcontinent), is also repeatedly taught by accomplished beings such as glorious Saraha and the great treatises on essential points. Those who abide by this tradition say: Scholars are speculators; there is no speculation of the guru. In particular, Saraha said: When thoughts decline, wisdom also declines, and those with evil wisdom speculate in reverse. From this (wisdom), what good thoughts could arise that surpass the sky? Unprecedented, in spring, the flowers and fruits of the sky appear; Saraha, they cannot be picked or touched by hand. To look without blinking, without thinking, and to stop the breath is the teaching of the guru. Thus, he spoke very clearly. That is, when thoughts decline, wisdom, that is, prajna, also declines. This is said to be the tradition of those with evil wisdom. The tradition of the guru is: In the non-discriminating sky, there is no dharma that does not appear. This is (the tradition of the guru). Therefore, the way to abide in equipoise is: In a secluded place, the body should possess the seven dharmas of Vairochana. In particular, the eyeballs should not move, and the eyelids should not blink, possessing an unwavering posture. The mouth should not speak, the behavior of a mute. The essential point of the mind is samadhi (藏文:ཏིང་ངེ་འཛིན་,梵文天城体:समाधि,梵文罗马拟音:samādhi,汉语字面意思:等持), and the hope for its fruit, complete enlightenment, as well as afflictions, and discriminating thoughts, and the fear of their fruit, samsara and the lower realms. This and this are faults, so they should be abandoned. This and this are virtues, so they should be relied upon. Like this, abandoning all mental speculation, one should abide without alteration in the nature of the mind that naturally arises. If a thought arises, one should sustain the nature of whatever arises without grasping, practicing in a state of non-grasping, in which nothing exists, that is, without finding even a particle of an object to be cultivated, and abiding in that state without distraction for even a moment. If thoughts arise from thoughts, continuously like a thread, then afflictions will also continue in that way, and one will accumulate negative karma, so one should rely on mindfulness and awareness, and not chase after the past (563).
