Therefore, a very definite understanding arose. When I went inside, (I saw) she was milking wild animal milk, in order to collect it for their respective children. (She) was sitting there, (and said to me), "My wild animals (240) have all run away, (but) they haven't run away from you." I replied, "I haven't eaten meat for five hundred lifetimes." She herself would eat a little tsampa and a little leaf, saying, "This morning I'm eating happily." Then she offered me two pieces of tsampa and one leaf. After that, (we) had many Dharma discussions. Kharagpa asked, "By meditating on the difficulty of finding leisure and endowment and impermanence of death, have you turned your mind away from this life? By meditating on the law of karma and the faults of samsara, have you turned your mind away from non-virtue? By meditating on loving-kindness, compassion, and bodhicitta, have you turned your mind away from solitary peace? Have you turned your mind away from the selflessness of all phenomena? Have you turned your mind away from grasping and the grasped?" She replied, "Indeed, it is so." Regarding this, the four turnings of the mind, the seven things to meditate on, and the three-three practices are included within them. She also said that in the stone cave where she lived, if she stood up, her head would hit the edge of the rock and bleed, and when she went to the door, a thorn would pierce her foot and bleed. She thought, "These two things should be cut off." But then she thought, "I'm about to die right now." Therefore, she didn't have time to cut them off, and she single-mindedly engaged in practice. Zhang Rinpoche said, "Not being liberated from samsara is because one has not realized the meaning of the true nature. That is because one has not purified obscurations, has not accumulated merit, has not generated faith, and has not remembered death." Regarding this, if a genuine thought of impermanence of death arises, then the faith of renunciation will arise like shedding a shell, then accumulate merit, thereby purify obscurations, thereby realize the meaning of the true nature, and thereby be liberated from samsara. Guru Padmasambhava said, "If one remembers a genuine impermanence of death, then unnecessary thoughts will definitely arise, one will engage in the path of liberation with diligence, one will seek a true guru, one will naturally turn away from non-virtue, one will not be attached to possessions, and one will regard busyness as a demon. At that time, all qualities will come like being piled up in the mindstream. However, Tibetan practitioners do not seem to remember the impermanence of death." Dampa Rinpoche said, "If you think about death, there will be nothing unnecessary (to do), always remember it."

Please do, Dingriwa! He said. The sutra says: Among all concepts, the most excellent is to diligently cultivate the concept of death and impermanence. Thus it is said. (243) This practice of contemplating death and impermanence, the speakers speak for a long time, the listeners listen for a long time, and the practitioners practice for a long time, yet it is not enough, and it has become a profound Dharma. The Dharma Lord Teacher said: By contemplating death and impermanence, it initially encourages virtue, in the middle it whips on diligence, and ultimately it realizes the absence of inherent existence. If it were permanent, it would be true; if it were true, it would be permanent. Because it is impermanent, it is not true; because it is not true, it is impermanent. He said. All phenomena of appearance and sound are manifestations of one's own mind. As it says in the "Two Examinations": The mind is the only great one, manifested in the form of gods. Therefore, the five aggregates, the five elements, the five afflictions, the six faculties, the six sense bases, the six colors, and the six realms are all manifestations of one's own mind (244). The form aggregate is not diamond. Thus it is said. In the Lankavatara Sutra, it says: The mind disturbed by habitual tendencies appears to be real. The nature of the mind, which is not real, is mistaken in seeing external objects as real. Thus it is said. In the song, it says: Apart from the precious mind, there is no Buddha and no person. All objects of consciousness, there is not a single one that is external. Thus it is said. If the six realms of beings are arranged in a row on the same riverbank, hell beings see boiling bitter water, pretas see nasal blood, asuras see weapons, animals and humans see water, and gods see nectar. The sutra says: Hell beings, pretas, animals, and gods, the six realms, the same object is perceived differently due to different minds, therefore desires are not fulfilled (245). Thus it is said. In the Manjushri Play Sutra, the son of the gods, Lotus Play, said to Manjushri: Manjushri, are these external objects created by a creator, or how should they be viewed? Manjushri said: Son of the gods, these external objects are not created by a creator, but are manifested by the power of the increasing habitual tendencies of mental discrimination. The son of the gods said: No matter how one views habitual tendencies, how can mountains, oceans, sun, moon, and other solid and dense objects appear?
