Furthermore, the co-emergent Dharmakāya is luminous by nature. As stated in the 'Praise of the Victorious Sky': 'The meditation of luminosity is without outflows, without dust and without seed, therefore it is unmoving. The essence of the co-emergent Dharmakāya is the very essence of spontaneous Bodhicitta.' Therefore, death is also called the Dharmakāya. As Arya Deva said: 'Death is the ultimate truth, while birth is the conventional truth.' The luminosity of death, or the luminosity of nature, is so called. Because one has been familiar with luminosity before, at that time, the luminosity of nature and meditation meet like mother and child, and one abides in that luminosity. Therefore, the cities of the six realms of Bardo do not appear. (201) Abiding in that luminosity, the cities of the six realms of Bardo do not appear. From the unborn body of the luminous Dharmakāya, the two form bodies arise spontaneously and unimpededly. Thus, until Samsara is empty, one ripens and liberates all sentient beings according to their needs. As stated in the five tantras, such as the 'Wisdom Play': 'The person who has realized luminosity will not see the city of Bardo. The appearance of the form body arises for the benefit of others, like a wish-fulfilling jewel.' This refers to those with superior faculties who attain Mahamudra in one lifetime, and are called Buddhas. The second case is that if one's practice of luminosity is insufficient and one fails to abide in the luminosity of the first Bardo, then within the first three and a half days of the first week, the appearances of the previous life's body, the wealth of the land, relatives, and so on will arise. Moreover, this is the mind-body that possesses all faculties and is endowed with the magical power of karma (202). As stated in the tantras such as 'Four Seats' and in the teachings of Vasubandhu: 'Having the fleshly body of previous existence, possessing all faculties, flowing from beginningless time, endowed with the power of karmic magic, without mountains or rocks, without obstruction, seen by the pure divine eye of the same kind, the mother's womb and the Vajra seat, except for these two, it travels unimpededly, because it is a mind-body.' Therefore, at this time, awareness does not arise in the Bardo. From three and a half days onwards, the appearances of the next life will briefly arise, unable to endure the fatigue of the previous body, and from the days of hunger, thirst, and suffering, relatives will

Therefore, seeing people not giving food and drink, and uttering wails, a strong fear arises, thinking, "Ah! I am dead, who do I rely on now? What should I do?" Strong attachment and hatred arise for former homelands, houses, possessions (203), wives and mothers, enemies and friends, etc. At that time, one knows that one has gone from being alive to being dead, separated from loving relatives, without reliance or protection, struck by the executioners of karma, enduring unbearable suffering and torment, running in all directions, and uttering a great sound of "Alas!" Therefore, if the bardo is short, it is only one week, and if it is long, it is seven weeks. Having experienced various bardo sufferings, one will take rebirth. Therefore, previous instructions say that when one thinks, "I am dead," the lama previously said, "In the bardo, recognize the bardo, practice Heruka." Now that time has arrived, do not be afraid of the bardo, but think of this as an opportunity to attain Buddhahood (204), and pray to the lama. All appearances of the bardo are self-appearances, and all self-appearances are false, so contemplate them as illusions and dreams, and then pray to the emanations of the yidam. In particular, contemplate the outer vessel world as a palace, the inner beings as deities and goddesses, and one's own body as the deity of the three samayas. By the power of the dreams previously practiced, one will appear as the Sambhogakaya of Heruka, adorned with marks and signs, appearing but without inherent existence, clear but without conceptualization, a deity body of bliss without attachment, the nature of the Dharmakaya of Mahamudra, the form of the Sambhogakaya, the activity of the Nirmanakaya, the indivisible great bliss body will naturally arise. Moreover, until the ocean of samsara is empty, one will mature and liberate all sentient beings in various ways. Therefore, the fruit of previously cultivating the ripening body and the habitual body (205) in the form of seeds on the body ripens at this time. The bardo mind body changes easily, and is sixteen or thirty times clearer, so it is impossible not to attain Buddhahood at that time, do not hesitate or doubt. Third, because one is not accustomed to the deity body and clear light, one has not grasped the clear light of the bardo.
