If one does not obtain self-mastery of the ground, even if one meditates for eons, it is in vain. After the previous thought has ceased, and the subsequent thought has not yet arisen, there is a dazed state. In the state of clarity without thought, a place without support, devoid of foundation and root. This present, fresh awareness, is the dharmakāya of one's own mind, free from elaboration. Whatever appears is one's own mind. (605) One's own mind, free from elaboration, is the dharmakāya. Therefore, thoughts are the play of the dharmakāya. Appearances are unceasing, and emptiness is established. Whatever arises, whatever appears, hold it with mindfulness. Loosen and relax, and see just that. If you recognize your own face, continue again and again. Leave it uncorrected, unscattered, in its own place. Free from going and coming, birth and death, and the three abodes. This is the great seal (Mahāmudrā). It is precious to carry it on the path without distraction. It is especially precious to cultivate it effortlessly and naturally. Thus it is said. These are the recognition of this wisdom, which is the nature of the three—clarity, awareness, and emptiness—in the interval between previous and subsequent thoughts, having recognized one's own face. This very thing, Lord Milarepa said: "At the boundary between previous and subsequent thoughts, wisdom arises as an ornament and delights." Thus it is said. And also, in the oral transmission, the Vajra Lines, it is said: "Seize it in the interval between sleep, dreams, and thoughts." Thus it is said. The key to seizing it in that (606) interval is: "With respect, look at the bindu without grasping the three poisons." This is what is said. The way to seize it in the interval between sleep and dreams, Lord Mogchokpa said: "In the strength of the interval between sleep and dreams, the lamp of the clear light of reality is found. Now it is like dispelling the darkness of ignorance." Thus he said. The meaning of that is: Because sleep is the condition, the collection of thoughts ceases, and in the interval before the appearance of dreams, a clear light dawns for everyone, but because it is not recognized, it does not become the path. The yogi, by the key of non-distraction, recognizes that as his own face, and therefore it becomes the path. If that is so, then this non-thought in the interval where the engagement with previous and subsequent objects is abandoned is an accidental emptiness. This is in the Bindu of Liberation: "It is not right to meditate only on the profound. The clear ones are also the same. Likewise, (607) I do not trust in the desire to be liberated by accidental profundity." Thus it is said that one is not liberated by accidental emptiness. Jampel Sakya Pandita said: "A fool who meditates on the Great Seal, mostly takes rebirth as an animal." The meaning of what he said is: In the instructions to Phruma Gomchen: Thoughts

Merely verbal quiescence (shamatha) and sudden arising vipassanā (insight), are great causes for falling into lower realms; those who desire good should abandon them. So it is said. I think that recognizing wisdom in the intervals between prior and subsequent thoughts transforms it into the path by recognizing one's own nature. Merely sudden arising emptiness, because it lacks complete knowledge of its own nature, does not become the path. The difference between these two is very great. In this regard, the great accomplished one said in the instruction manual of the Great Seal Gau Ma: "With the way of looking with the eyes, etc., sever the thought of wanting to meditate, 'I want to meditate on this,' and leave it uncorrected, which is the natural state of mind." Remaining stunned and focused in that state is the measure of the preliminary stage. Such a state is called ordinary awareness. In the intervals of cessation and rest, etc., it arises briefly in the minds of all sentient beings, but because it is not recognized, they wander in samsara. So it is said. Third, in order to avoid mixing errors into the pith instructions, it is shown that they are adorned with experience, scriptural authority, and seals: Alas! In the degenerate age when wrong views confuse the mindstream and disputes are fierce, genuine Dharma is like a star in the daytime or a turtle's hair. When false Dharma is like milk adulterated with water in the marketplace, cherish adornment with experience, scriptural authority, and seals. Just as in the marketplace, milk is sold adulterated with water, so too, one deceives faithful disciples by mixing one's own fabrications into the pith instructions. In order to avoid this, one should use one's own experience as a standard, the scriptural authority of the Buddha's sutras and tantras, and the seals of the dakinis to adorn them. As it is said: The oral transmission, the single transmission of the six dharmas, will be mixed with errors in the future. At that time, various methods of guidance will arise. In order to dispel the doubts of the faithful, the seals of unerring key points are set forth. So it is said. Therefore, this very pith instruction, even the numbers of prayers to the wisdom dakini herself, are sealed with seals, and therefore it is more excellent than other pith instructions. In this regard, Jetsun Drolchok Zhap said in his song: The secret essence of the dakini's heart, the uncorrected seal, the vajra knot, the meaning falls to the heart, the nature of things, shines as the nourishment of the beggar's mind's path to liberation. So it is said. Fourth, the way to obtain the result by meditating on the path, together with the certainty of the time: Alas! The supreme path
