The terms "suchness" and "ordinary" are not different in meaning. Therefore, keeping the mind as it is, is called "unfabricated." This mind is also not tainted by various consciousnesses, so it is specifically called "ordinary awareness." And "ordinary" is also used in the sense of being without fabrication or natural, like the "ordinary" in "ordinary speech." The teacher Toktse Zhap said, "Ordinary awareness awakens in the heart center, and when the six aggregates are purified, great bliss is continuous. All actions are the cause of meaningless suffering, so without meditation, rest in the original state." Therefore, this way of resting the mind without fabrication (600) is stated in the Mahayana Sutra Ornament, "Just as when water becomes clear from turbidity, the clarity does not arise from the turbidity, it is merely the removal of impurities. Similarly, the purification of one's own mind is the same." Furthermore, there are two types of water, clear and turbid. Therefore, clarity is the natural state or nature of water itself, which is unfabricated, and is therefore called the natural clarity of water. Similarly, the mind also has two types, clear and turbid. Turbidity refers to the emanation of various thoughts, which gives rise to various actions, etc. Clarity refers to the absence of thoughts, not clinging to objects such as form, but resting serenely like the sky. There are many methods of guiding such cultivation, but the one famous within the Shangpa Kagyu lineage itself is the Great Seal "Gau Ma," and the method of meditating on it is: (601) First, through the three aspects of the preliminary practice, perfectly accomplish the faultless shamatha, and then through the four faults of the main practice, self-liberate, discriminate the nature of mind, and ultimately the four kayas will be self-liberated. Regarding this, the Venerable Maitripa said, "The Madhyamaka that is not adorned with the words of the guru is only of middling quality." Therefore, the emptiness spoken of in the Introduction to Madhyamaka is the Madhyamaka of the middle level, while the emptiness of awareness is the doctrine of the supreme Madhyamaka. The Madhyamikas, first establish emptiness through inference, and then when becoming familiar with it, just as the fire that arises from rubbing wood burns the wood itself, the familiarity that arises from inference will burn away conceptualization.

If one wishes to dispel obstacles and generate direct perception (602), then, regarding the methods of instruction for Mahamudra, is there a criterion for assessing whether direct perception arises as expected? If so, what kind of criterion is it? In this regard, this is the view of the instruction lineage. For some, they are taught, "Carefully examine what your mind is like, day and night." Thus, the conceptual thought of searching is given precedence. For others, abandoning the mental activity of the three times (past, present, future), and abiding in an unwavering state, this itself will give rise to what is called "one-pointedness" characterized by direct perception. When it arises, then, in a manner of facing inward, look at your own mind. Simply allow yourself to observe through the method of staring and abiding. For example, just as when observing whether there are creatures in the water, one simply squints and looks. This is the method of searching through non-conceptual direct perception (603), from which arises the direct perception of seeing all phenomena as selfless. Here, just as the eye that looks at the water, is the devotion and respect for the lama who sees the truth. And the consciousness of that eye is like the direct perception that faces inward. This method is also as stated in the Great Vehicle Treatise on the Sublime Continuum: "Because the nature of the mind is clear light, one sees that afflictions have no essence." This shows one-pointedness. "Whoever truly realizes that all beings are selfless and peaceful." This shows the direct realization of selflessness. This is called "yoga free from elaboration." This freedom from elaboration is not merely a negation of non-existence, but rather the dharma of awareness in which no characteristic is established, the momentary awareness that does not fall to either side of appearance and emptiness, (604) is called Mahamudra. To point this out, the great accomplished one gave instructions to Khampa Tsultrim Delek Pal: "Relax and loosen into the natural state, completely sever the root of delusion. Watch your own mind without distraction, grasp it tightly with mindfulness without forgetting. If you do not recognize your own face, even if you oppress yourself with suffering, you will only feel confused. If you do not seize the clear light during sleep, even if you recognize the nature of mind, the meaning is small. If you do not seize the clear light in the bardo, the crucial suffering will itch like a sore. Your own mind"
