One must arise within oneself. If it doesn't arise, even if instructions are given, understanding will not come. Therefore, the main introduction is to abiding: If abiding arises, the recognition of luminosity is grasped. Once that is grasped, one can distinguish between favorable and unfavorable conditions in appearances. Based on that, all experiences and realizations will arise. Master Shantideva said: 'Through the superior insight that fully possesses calm abiding, it should be known that afflictions are completely abandoned. Initially, calm abiding should be sought, and that is accomplished without dependence on worldly things.' So it is said. Lama Sangye Ton (610 AD) said: 'Rather than meditating for an eon with elaboration, a moment of abiding is better.' If that arises, all qualities will manifest. Rather than years and months with elaboration, understanding emptiness is also better.' So it is said. Then, how do qualities arise from abiding? The Indian master said: 'It is good for a yogi to disrupt meditation, but disrupting abiding will cause realization to arise.' So it is said. At that time, greatly increase resolve, make a firm decision, generate certainty, and cultivate faith.' So it is said. In that state, do not denigrate the law of cause and effect. Nagarjuna said: 'Having understood that all phenomena are empty, the interdependence of actions and results is more wonderful than a miracle, more marvelous than the marvelous.' So it is said. Maitripa mainly emphasizes the main practice, which means the four faults are naturally liberated. Sukhasiddhi mainly emphasizes the subsequent practice, which means the four kayas are naturally manifest. All three are similar in meaning. Second, the main practice should be free from the four faults, that is, the first fault is being too close and not seeing. Although the empty mind is inseparable from the Dharmakaya, it continuously abides within oneself in the three times. Although always accompanied, one has never seen its face. It's like going to Harelong and Cherelong and not seeing. What is not seen? One's own face is not seen. Who does not see? One does not see oneself. How does one not see? One does not see with the impurity of dualistic grasping. What is it like not seeing? It's like the eye not seeing itself, or like showing forms to a blind person. From the Uttaratantra: 'Because it is subtle, it is not an object of hearing; because it is the ultimate truth, it is not an object of thought; because the nature of reality is profound, it is not an object of worldly meditation and so on. Because it is like showing forms to a blind person, children do not directly see it.'

Thus it is. Therefore, due to the fault of not seeing because it is too close, one wanders in samsara. As it is said, now relying on the blessings of the lama, and the three aspects of the extraordinary method of self-abiding, that very ordinary consciousness, clear and empty, without grasping, is not stained by the impurities of virtue, vice, and neutrality. In a state where the object and the subject (613) do not exist as two, seeing and recognizing it as self-empty, one is liberated from the fault of not seeing. In the "Dense Array Ornament" it says: "Consciousness, clear and empty, is the basis of all, it is known as neutral." Thus it is said. Tilopa said: "Kyeho! This is self-aware wisdom, it transcends the path of speech, it is not the realm of the mind. Tilopa, I have nothing to show, recognize yourself by yourself." Thus it is said. Secondly, the fault of not recognizing because it is too profound is: Although Mahamudra arises in oneself, it cannot be symbolized by any example, as it is said. It is beyond example, color, qualities, and letters are beyond example. Thus it is said. In the "Collection Sutra" it says: "Seeing the sky (614), it is said to be the language of sentient beings, how does the sky appear, examine its meaning. Thus the Tathagata taught that seeing the Dharma is also like that, the view cannot be expressed by any other example." Thus it is said. It transcends the realm of the mind, because it is too profound, as it is said. Ordinary consciousness is non-intentional, that is, it arises in all sentient beings when the wind-mind enters the central channel, and during cessation and rest, etc., but because it is not connected with the three aspects of the extraordinary method of self-abiding, it is stolen by the thief of conceptual thought, and is separated from the vigilant guard of non-distraction. Due to the fault of not recognizing, one wanders in samsara. Now, looking nakedly at everything that appears with a way of seeing (615), thinking that my preliminary practice has already arisen spontaneously, recognizing it with the path, and with a continuous memory of recognition, one is liberated from the fault of not recognizing, self-arising is recognition. Thirdly, the fault of not believing because it is too easy is: When abiding in self-nature, it arises at any time, because it is too easy, as it is said, if there is nothing else, it is easy to see, thinking like this and not believing. As it is said, thinking, "Can this non-intentional action naturally accomplish the meaning of meditation?" One doubts. As it is said, even if it is pointed out, if one does not meditate, after understanding, one does not believe, because one does not meditate without distraction, therefore, due to this fault, one wanders in samsara. Now the lama
