Considering the risk of losing the good fortune of (632), if one cultivates abiding in the mind on top of gaining the experience of view, both shamatha and vipassana will be accomplished simultaneously. And considering the key points of easily guiding disciples and easily gaining experience, it seems that practice is not done here. Now, among all of these, the most supreme is also the chief of all instructions, and also the ultimate end of all practices, which is to teach the Prajnaparamita. There are three kinds of wisdom: the wisdom of ultimate meaning, the wisdom of conventional truth, and the wisdom of benefiting others. The first is the wisdom of realizing the emptiness of reality (633). The second is the wisdom of knowing without error the nature, divisions, causes, effects, and interdependent origination of all knowable things. The third is the wisdom of knowing how to benefit beings through the four means of gathering. That is, by giving material gifts, knowing how to make beings happy and establish them in the Dharma; knowing how to speak sweetly, teaching the Dharma in accordance with their minds; knowing how to place beings in the practice of the six paramitas; knowing how to conduct oneself without deviating from the six paramitas. Among these, placing others in the six paramitas is done through knowing the means of taming whatever is to be tamed (634). Or, it is the wisdom of hearing, contemplating, and meditating. Through hearing, one understands; through contemplation, one cuts off imputations; through meditation, one directly realizes wisdom. These three I must generate in my own mindstream in any way possible. This is training in the intention of the Prajnaparamita. This is the twenty-fifth object of focus. Now, one must train in the application of the Prajnaparamita, which is to meditate on the selflessness of persons, meditate on the selflessness of phenomena, and train in the essence of emptiness and compassion. There are three. The first is, the preliminaries and subsequent practices are as previously explained (635). In the main practice, one sits in the vajra posture, places the hands in meditative equipoise, straightens the spine, slightly bends the neck, expands the shoulders outward, places the lips naturally, touches the palate with the tip of the tongue, and gazes at the tip of the nose. Then, exhale three times through the nose with a 'sang sang' sound. After that, leave the breath as it is. Meditate on a small amount of renunciation and weariness, and generate love and compassion in your mindstream.

Focus the mind on body, speech, and mind, and engage in analytical explanation. Since beginningless samsara, we are accustomed to grasping at 'I' as real, but apart from appearing as if there is an 'I,' (636) I think that the so-called 'I' or 'self' does not exist in reality at all. These are the bases for observation. Now, if the so-called 'I' or 'self' exists in reality, then it should be the self of a person. But since it does not exist in any thing, such a self of a person cannot be pointed out in terms of its essence. However, if we follow the way of grasping and presuming of the self-grasping that grasps at the non-existent as existent, it is grasped as permanent, single, and independent. For example, 'I did this last year,' 'I will do this now,' 'The 'I' of last year is this 'I' now,' 'This will continue to go on,' this is called grasping at permanence. (637) When the thought 'now' arises, it appears as if there is a single, self-sufficient essence that is not mixed with any other internal or external things, this is grasping at singularity. Just as one enjoys wealth or possessions as if one is the owner of material things or retinue, this is called grasping at independence. Although the way of grasping is like that, it is not established as such. If the self were permanent, then if the self experienced happiness once, it should always be happy, and if it experienced suffering once, it should always suffer. If one is bound in samsara at the beginning, then there would be no time for liberation later (638). If one is in the state of liberation later, then one should not have experienced samsara before. Therefore, happiness and suffering alternate, and the states of being bound and liberated are different, so it is decided that there is no permanent self. It is also not possible to be single, because the so-called 'I' appears to exist in one's own aggregates of body and mind. The eye is not the self, nor are the ear, nose, tongue, and mind the self. If each of them were the self, then there would be many selves. If each of them is not the self, then the self cannot be found. Furthermore, if the self were the aggregates, then the self would be permanent. If the self were other than the aggregates, then it would contradict the notion that when the eye consciousness (639) sees something, 'I see it,' and when the body feels touch, 'I feel it.' Therefore, the 'I' with a single nature is not established. Since singularity is not established, independence is not established. In particular, since all actions and activities are manifestly seen to depend on conditions, there is no independent self.
