Is being done. I must accomplish Buddhahood, and if I must learn from the biographies of past Bodhisattvas, then to not endure even this much hardship for the sake of Dharma, and yet claim to be a Mahayana practitioner, is truly foolish! One should dispel such thoughts with steadfast antidotes. For Dharma, the patience that is truly kept in mind is a profound method, a distinction of skillful means, a great patience, limitless qualities, and a way of understanding anything, including the unelaborated nature of reality. It also refers to the ability to abide in emptiness for a long time. Now, here, all harm and suffering are like illusions, like dreams, appearing even though they are actually empty of inherent existence, so what is there that cannot be endured? One should meditate in this way. This is the forty-eighth practice. Now, furthermore, one must also train in the perfection of diligence, which has three aspects: armor-like diligence, applying diligence, and irreversible diligence. Armor-like diligence is: with regard to all virtuous Dharmas, not thinking that this much is not necessary to do, nor having the timidity of thinking that great ones alone can accomplish this much, but thinking that I must accomplish all of these, and I am also able to accomplish them, and I will accomplish them right now, and I will accomplish them continuously. This is the joy and unyielding courage towards virtue that is connected with the vow of the mind. One should apply this to one's own mindstream and meditate on it repeatedly. Applying diligence (627) is, when actually engaging in practice, not being controlled by laziness and distraction, but immediately engaging in virtue with joy, and continuously maintaining that joy. Irreversible diligence is: even if warmth signs and benefits do not immediately arise, one should never turn back from whatever one initially engaged in, no matter how long it takes, no matter how much hardship one must endure, until the result is manifest. Furthermore, in some instructions of the Stages of the Path, it is also mentioned: the diligence of the body is prostrations and circumambulations, etc.; the diligence of speech is recitations and readings, etc.; the diligence of the mind (628) is the diligence of joy towards general virtue, and especially towards this Dharma. In any case, diligence is all of these.

Yes, I too shall strive with diligence. Without giving in to laziness and procrastination, I shall rejoice in virtue, thus contemplating and cultivating. The forty-ninth mind-training topic. Now, there is also the perfection of meditation to be done, and one must abide in its causes and conditions from now on. For the cause of samadhi, one needs a solitary mind. For its cause, one needs a solitary body. For its cause, one needs few affairs and little activity. For its cause, one needs to be content with little desire. For its cause (629), one needs to be content with just enough coarse food, clothing, lodging. If I have wealth, I will not be attached to it, but will cultivate samadhi. If I do not have wealth, then not having wealth is good, for there is no obstacle to dharma. Whatever happens, be content with that, thinking and cultivating again and again. Thus, the thought of the cause of samadhi is gone. The fiftieth mind-training topic. Actually, meditation can be divided into many types. Although there are many different ways to classify it, "meditation that abides in bliss in this very life" refers to accomplishing the bliss of body and mind that are extremely tamed. "Meditation that accomplishes qualities" (630) refers to accomplishing clairvoyance and magical powers, etc., from the general and specific aspects. "Meditation that benefits sentient beings" refers to relying on the power of samadhi to bless the minds of others, or to acting for the benefit of sentient beings by relying on the special abilities of clairvoyance. All of these must rely on one meditation that is free from faults and perfectly endowed with qualities. I must first settle my mind in shamatha. Then, I must also accomplish all the other excellent qualities of samadhi. Thus, contemplate and cultivate again and again. (631) The fifty-first mind-training topic. Here, only the nature of shamatha is briefly explained, and it would be good if one could generate certainty about it. Although it is appropriate to teach the guidance of shamatha here, it is sufficient to generate certainty about the view and gain experience, even without stable shamatha. First, cultivate stable shamatha well, and then cultivate the view on its basis, thereby accomplishing vipashyana, which is the view of all the great treatises, and a great path. However, nowadays, dull-witted individuals take a long time to accomplish a faultless, stable abiding of the mind, so cultivate the Prajnaparamita.
