Oh. Furthermore, for this person, there is one contemplation that focuses on experiencing actual suffering; one contemplation that focuses on the cause of suffering; and one that combines the two, making a total of three (595) methods. As previously explained in the context of loving-kindness, gradually expanding to everything and meditating on it will also be good. Furthermore, after one has practiced the instructions on loving-kindness and compassion, these two become connected. Therefore, each loving-kindness can be meditated upon in accordance with compassion. It is also acceptable not to separate them into separate sections. Third, meditating on the mind of enlightenment, which is divided into two: the meditation on aspirational bodhicitta and the meditation on engaging bodhicitta. These two are also called the mind of aspiration for enlightenment and training in the practice of the perfections (596). The first of these includes three aspects: training in actual bodhicitta, training in remembering the benefits, and vowing to what is to be learned. First, meditate in conjunction with the previous two, loving-kindness and compassion: These mothers must be happy, they must be joyful. Seeing that they are unhappy, not joyful, and in suffering, I feel very sorry, and I have no way to eliminate their suffering. I have no way to establish them in happiness. However, I do not have that ability. Moreover, neither do Brahma, Indra, nor the wheel-turning kings. So who does have it? Only the perfect (597) Buddha has it. In that way, if one strives to attain Buddhahood, it will be attained. Therefore, I shall attain Buddhahood. Having attained it, I shall liberate beings from samsara. For the sake of benefiting all sentient beings, I must attain Buddhahood. One should think this repeatedly. This is the fortieth contemplation. In the previous thirty-fourth contemplation, in the context of training in the gateway of aspiration, one meditates on merely seeking perfect enlightenment by knowing the qualities of the Buddha and knowing the difference between the Great and Small Vehicles. Merely by that, the definition of the mind of enlightenment is not perfected (598). Here, by meditating on the thought of seeking perfect enlightenment solely for the sake of others, the definition of aspirational bodhicitta becomes complete. Although there was some thought of others' benefit earlier, since loving-kindness and compassion were not perfected, the focus on others' benefit does not arise primarily. Then the second

The practice of contemplating benefits: The benefit of accomplishing all one's own purposes is: The sutra says, "The mind of enlightenment is like a seed, for it generates all the Buddha's teachings." The benefit of accomplishing the purposes of others is: "Beings increase in white dharma, like a field." (599) The benefit of eliminating all faults is: "All misdeeds are exhausted, like under the earth." The benefit of obtaining qualities is: "All qualities gather, like a great ocean." As it says, there are four benefits. Now, from the very practice of cultivating the mind of enlightenment, the seed of liberation in one's own mindstream is nourished, and all virtuous imprints are awakened. With that good intention, one actually benefits sentient beings, and one also gains the ability to help. Just by cultivating this, many sins are purified, and the power of afflictions such as attachment, hatred, pride, jealousy, etc. (600) is destroyed, the mindstream becomes gentle, all qualities arise, and having vowed to attain Buddhahood, even one of the many other qualities that must be cultivated will naturally come about. From then until the ultimate end, the realization of one's own benefit, the activity of others' benefit, the abandonment of what should be abandoned, and the accomplishment of all qualities are all done by this. In short, just as the omniscient one has so many qualities, the mind of enlightenment also has them. Just as the Buddha is worthy of respect, so is this. Generate a joyful and enthusiastic mind for the mind of enlightenment, and again cultivate the mind of enlightenment as before (601). Repeat that again and again. In the breaks between sessions, also repeatedly cultivate the object of taking the accumulation that one takes oneself for generating the mind. Also, if one has not previously generated the mind of enlightenment, then repeat the seven-limbed practice, because the phrase "May I attain Buddhahood for the benefit of beings" that appears in the continuous confession is the mind of enlightenment. This is the forty-one objects of focus. Third, vowing to the precepts: The first precept is to train in not abandoning sentient beings. There are two ways to abandon sentient beings: abandoning them as a group and abandoning them individually. The former (602) is to have a wrong view about entering the Dharma, thinking, "It is useless for me to accomplish my own or others' benefit, I might as well be an ordinary person." And to have a wrong view about the Mahayana, thinking, "I cannot accomplish the benefit of sentient beings, I might as well just listen to myself."
