Remaining without obstruction is called liberation. The so-called abandoning without returning means that once liberation is attained, it is impossible to fall back from that state. The cause for attaining liberation is realizing the nature of selflessness and other realities through unimpeded wisdom, and attaining it by abandoning obscurations. The cause for that is single-pointed concentration, which requires pure morality. That morality, if grasped by a pure mind of renunciation and the view of selflessness, is a strong cause for liberation. Now, in order to be liberated from samsara, one should maintain morality, meditate on concentration, generate wisdom arising from meditation, and repeatedly contemplate the meaning of impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and selflessness. This is the thirty-third object of focus. Here, it would be good to briefly explain the common characteristics of peaceful nirvana and the individual characteristics of the three trainings. Although the instruction on calm abiding and meditating on the selflessness of the individual are also appropriate here, the core of the practice is not done in the manner of the middling person's practice, but is integrated with the intention of the great person. Therefore, at this point, only the steps of training the aim of wanting to learn the path to liberation are practiced. Up to this point, the practice of the middling person is complete. Now, the third is to train in the uncommon intention of the great person, to train in the entrance to that intention, and the various methods of making it extensive. First, connecting with the previous, when contemplating the faults of samsara, one must attain a nirvana that abandons samsara. In order to attain that, one must train in the three trainings (567). Then, the nirvana to be attained is divided into three bodhis: the bodhis of the Hearers, the bodhis of the Solitary Realizers, and the Complete Bodhi. Among these three, the two bodhis of the Hearers and Solitary Realizers are not complete in their abandonment and realization for their own benefit. In terms of benefiting others, they lack the vast mind to benefit sentient beings. Their abandonment is incomplete, as they only abandon the obscurations of afflictions and not the obscurations of knowledge. Their realization is incomplete, as they only realize the selflessness of the individual and temporary dependent arising, but not the selflessness of phenomena and ultimate dependent arising. In terms of qualities (

(568) Moreover, even if there are differences, they are only sporadic and do not increase infinitely. To seek liberation for oneself alone without delivering sentient beings from suffering is shameless, petty, and short-sighted, a liberation that abandons the benefit of others. Those noble beings do not regress in samsara, and their minds naturally abide in non-elaboration, possessing numerous qualities. Although they are unimaginably great compared to us ordinary beings, when compared to the way Buddhas and Bodhisattvas eliminate the two obscurations, the way their wisdom of knowing reality as it is and knowing the extent of all things increases, the way they possess (569) limitless qualities, the way they possess immeasurable power of compassion and miraculous abilities, and the way they engage in inconceivable activities of benefiting sentient beings at all times and in all directions, the liberation of Hearers and Solitary Realizers seems very small. For example, the difference is as great as that between Mount Meru and a mustard seed. Therefore, abandon self-interest, perfect all realizations, and attain perfect enlightenment, the collection of liberation, which has the nature of inexhaustible benefit for others. Repeatedly think: How can I attain Buddhahood (570)? This is the thirty-fourth mind-training practice. Second, the methods for elaborating on it are: contemplating the relationship of cause and effect, and contemplating the meaning of cause and effect. That is, meditate in this way, connecting it with the previous mind-training practice: I must attain Buddhahood, and the cause of Buddhahood is the mind of enlightenment. The cause of that is compassion. The cause of that is loving-kindness. The cause of that is knowing and repaying kindness. The cause of that is seeing all sentient beings as parents. (571) I must cultivate these in order. All sentient beings are parents, and their kindness is immense. How wonderful it would be if they could be free from suffering! How wonderful it would be if they could be happy and joyful! In order to place them in happiness, I must attain Buddhahood. After attaining Buddhahood, I will also place all sentient beings on the level of Buddhahood, repeatedly meditate in this way. This is the thirty-fifth mind-training practice. This is the instruction passed down from Geshe Tumtonpa Lodrö Drak, a disciple of Geshe Sharwa's student Geshe Tumtonpa.
