All these cycles of suffering are not without cause and condition. If we want to reverse this cycle, we must abandon its cause. So, what is the cause? Suffering arises from accumulated karma. All these karmas must first be initiated by afflictions (557). If there are no afflictions, then later karma will not produce results, so the root lies in afflictions. The root cause of myself and sentient beings wandering in samsara is affliction, which is divided into six: desire, anger, pride, ignorance, wrong views, and doubt. Although there are various classifications such as the nine pervasive ones, the root of all is the three poisons: desire, hatred, and delusion. Although there are many kinds of karma, the karmas that throw us into samsara can be summarized into three. Non-meritorious karma (558), which is sinful karma, can throw us into the lower realms. Meritorious karma is the virtue of the desire realm where the mind is not equally placed, that is, giving and discipline, etc., which have not gone to the path of liberation, and is the cause of gods and humans in the desire realm. Immovable karma is the single virtuous karma of the samadhi of the four meditations or the four formless absorptions, which can throw us into the form realm and the formless realm. All of these are obscured by ignorance, which does not understand the true nature. Because of clinging to the aggregates of samsara, clinging to self, and cherishing self (559), it is taken up and becomes the cause of samsara. Among them, the affliction of ignorance, or delusion, is that when we examine our own minds, we do not understand the nature of samsara or where samsara comes from. We do not understand the nature of liberation or how to attain it. Nor do we know how to definitely accomplish these. Perhaps there is only some understanding from hearing and contemplation, but if we examine the way our own minds appear, no matter which aspect we look at, it is like placing our minds in a completely unfamiliar country far away, not knowing anything, just a dark and ignorant conceptualization (560). Because we do not understand the situation, we have doubts about the truth. Holding onto the non-existent "I" as real, all wrong views arise, and all wrong views are followers of delusion. Moreover, it exists, first clinging to one's own body and mind, and based on that.

Attachment arises towards sentient beings such as women, relatives, attendants, etc., and towards external objects of enjoyment such as food, clothing, possessions, houses, fields, wealth, goods, lands, etc. Right now, our delight in our body and possessions, and the mental afflictions that arise from it, are the disturbing emotion of desire. Based on this, all kinds of pride, miserliness, and jealousy (561) arise. Furthermore, if oneself or one's side is harmed, then hatred arises. The unpleasant feeling that arises in one's mind towards a sentient being who has harmed or is suspected of harming oneself or what one possesses is anger or hatred. Moreover, anger can also arise towards inanimate objects. For example, feeling displeasure towards the enemy's land and city, and even getting angry at the stream that harms one's field. This anger, when it becomes strong and expands, leads to coarse harmful intentions, as well as various expressions of hatred such as rage, resentment, and holding grudges (562). These three poisons are the main cause of wandering in samsara for all beings, so we must make an effort to abandon them now. Place them on your own mindstream, recognize the disturbing emotions that arise in your mindstream, and the actions that are motivated by them, and then meditate. This is the thirty-second point of mind training. In these situations, it is very beneficial to understand the classification of karma and disturbing emotions. Second, contemplate the cause and effect of liberation: I must be liberated from samsara and attain liberation (563). So, what is the nature of liberation? Liberation is not about escaping to another place. It is about abandoning the disturbing emotions on one's own mindstream from their very root, so that they never arise again, and purifying them in the dharmadhatu. Because of the purification of disturbing emotions, karma does not need to be specifically abandoned, because it has lost its ability to produce results, and in reality, it has vanished into the dharmadhatu. According to the scriptures, some seeds are abandoned, and some are made unable to produce fruit. By abandoning karma and disturbing emotions, new samsara is not created. The remaining old karmic traces (564) will also be quickly purified. Realizing the state where all the suffering of the three realms of samsara has ceased.
