All similar actions to unintentionally killing, etc., which are the ten non-virtuous actions, must be abandoned. This is something that must be done. Therefore, I should first abandon these actions, and repeatedly think in this way. These are the seventeen objects of focus. Now, we should contemplate the results of those non-virtuous actions: if each of these ten non-virtuous actions is done very strongly and repeatedly, one will be reborn in hell; if done moderately, one will be reborn as a hungry ghost; if done with little (516) strength and infrequently, one will be reborn as an animal. Being born into those realms of suffering is the result of complete maturation. Taking life leads to a short life; taking what is not given leads to little wealth; sexual misconduct leads to many enemies; lying leads to much slander against oneself; divisive speech leads to friends becoming enemies; harsh speech leads to hearing unpleasant words; idle talk leads to others not listening to one's words; covetousness leads to unfulfilled wishes; malice leads to suffering and fear arising in the mind; and wrong views lead to being very foolish and deluded (517). These are the results of experiencing the same cause. The result of acting in accordance with the cause is that having done this or that action before, one enjoys doing this or that action later. The dominating result manifests in the external world of objects: taking life leads to fruits and medicines, etc., having little potency; taking what is not given leads to bad harvests; sexual misconduct leads to places being dusty and smelly; lying leads to places being uneven and difficult to traverse; divisive speech leads to places becoming hot; harsh speech leads to sand and gravel, etc., increasing; (518) idle talk leads to the seasons being reversed, with winter rotting, spring freezing, summer drying, and autumn hailing, etc. Covetousness leads to grains becoming small. Malice leads to flavors becoming unpleasant. Wrong views lead to fruits not growing at all from the root. Thus, from these results of acting in accordance with the cause and these dominating results, having done this or that action, it will also manifest in that very rebirth. When one is reborn in a higher realm in a future life, it will also manifest at various uncertain times.

. Thus, these ten non-virtuous actions are the source of various undesirable sufferings (519). Therefore, from now on, even if it costs my life, I will not do them. I must also strive to find ways to purify all that I have done before, and repeatedly think in this way. This is the eighteenth contemplation point. Now, we should contemplate virtuous actions. Obtaining a heavenly body and all the happiness of samsara come from virtuous actions. The three forms of enlightenment that transcend the world also come from virtue. Abandon all my sins and learn all virtues as much as possible. Although there are many kinds of virtues to learn (520), the initial gateway to all virtues is called the "Ten White Virtues." This is the mind of renunciation, along with the corresponding behavior, in which the ten non-virtuous actions previously mentioned are abandoned by the mind, and the body and speech turn away from them. I should contemplate that I will always abide in this. The meaning of abandoning the ten non-virtuous actions with the mind is to recognize that they have faults and great shortcomings, and to never want to do them. Turning away with body and speech means not only not doing these ten non-virtuous actions in ordinary times or in leisure, but also, even if doing these things seems profitable (521), or if the opportunity arises to do them without effort, one is unable to engage in these evil deeds because of remembering the previous abandonment with the mind. For the seven actions of body and speech, both of these conditions must be met, while for the three actions of mind, abandonment with the mind alone is sufficient. Thinking that non-virtuous actions are bad is itself the mind of renunciation. This is because recognizing that bad things are bad, this unfailing conventional wisdom transforms into an important Dharma of the path, and this is the essence of discipline. If the mind of renunciation arises strongly several times (522), even if it is interrupted by sleep, drowsiness, and distraction, when such a situation is encountered, one will recognize that the evil deed is a fault and will not do it and will restrain oneself. This arises from the power of the previous thought, and that power also comes from the power of the seed. Therefore, the mind of abandoning the ten non-virtuous actions, along with its seed, is the ten virtuous actions. This is the nineteenth contemplation point. Now
