There are also those who guard and do not release. Those with inner obscurations have mouths as small as the eye of a needle, so that food and drink cannot enter their mouths at first. Even if a little enters, the food is lost in the wide space of their cheeks (500). Drinks are dried up by the great poison in their mouths. Even if they swallow food and drink, it cannot pass through their throats, which are as thin as bowstrings. Even if it passes, their stomachs are as large as mountains, so there is never a time when they are full. Those with obscurations of food and drink find that whatever they eat turns into a burning fire inside their stomachs, and they are scorched. From the very beginning, they must eat only bad and painful things such as ashes, excrement, pus, and blood, and they never find anything good. All these pretas generally suffer unbearable hunger and thirst at all times. (501) They are without clothes and are scorched by heat and frozen by cold, suffering immeasurably. In the cold of winter, even the sunlight helps the cold. In the heat of summer, even the moonlight brings scorching. When it rains, it feels like fire rain is falling, and they are scorched. They are always exhausted and weary from the busyness of searching for food, and their bodies become like withered things because they have no food or drink. Their three hundred and sixty bones crackle, and flames lick them like unpolished rough stones. They become enemies to each other, and there is fear of being caught, bound, beaten, and (502) having their limbs cut off. Sometimes, like blind people, they frighten themselves and walk in great fear without any support. Such suffering is very heavy, and most pretas live for as long as fifteen thousand years. The conclusion of the visualization and the subsequent actions are the same as before. The thirteenth section of visualization is complete. Although not included in that, there is now a tradition of doing a special visualization for these scattered, wandering hungry ghosts in the sky. In this way, by harming others, one falls into the lower realms again (503), and even unintentionally, one harms others with great poison, and there is the beating of powerful ones, and mixing with innocent victims. It is said that when bad things happen, suffering arises in the mind, and so on. Even if this section of visualization is not done separately, it is fine to combine it with the previous one.

Thinking about the suffering of animals: Animals are of two types: general and specific. The general ones live in the great ocean. Without a place of refuge, they are swept away by the waves and wander aimlessly. They (504) devour each other. They are constantly afraid of enemies, and their suffering is unbearable. Being eaten alive and so on, the suffering is unbearable. The specific ones exist in the realms of humans and gods. Those not possessed by humans are constantly afraid of enemies and have no peace of mind. Those possessed by humans also suffer from being plucked, pierced through the nose, beaten, and burdened with heavy loads. They are also killed for their meat, blood, skin, and bones, and suffer many kinds of killing, cutting, and exploitation. Furthermore, there are sufferings such as hunger, thirst, heat, cold, and fatigue (505), which are similar to the sufferings of hell or hungry ghosts. The main suffering is extreme ignorance, and they devour each other. Like guarding against enemies who eat human flesh, they must always be vigilant. The object of focus and the conclusion are the same as before. The preliminary and subsequent practices are also the same as before. This is the fourteenth object of focus. The above is a summary of the key points of these contents. Thinking about the suffering of the three lower realms in this way is truly unbearable. There must be a refuge to save us from them. Who can save us? Brahma (506) or Indra, or even a universal monarch cannot save us, so how can these others save us? Then who can save us? The Three Jewels can save us. I take refuge in the Guru, Yidam, and Three Jewels. I pray to the Buddha to be my teacher, I pray to the Dharma to be my practice, and I pray to the Sangha to be my friends in accomplishing this. Furthermore, even if one takes refuge in the Buddha, the saving power is the saving function of the Dharma. Even the Buddha cannot save someone like grabbing the hair of a person being swept away by the water. It is by teaching the Dharma and causing people to act according to the Dharma that one saves. Generate faith (507) in the Buddha, practice, and act according to the Dharma as he taught. We should constantly practice imitating how the noble Sangha acts. At the beginning and end of the session, recite the prayers related to taking refuge.
