The place is uncertain. Life is also uncertain; some are even longer than the actual (496). Some have short lives. The way of experiencing suffering is also uncertain, in various ways. The sutra says: experiencing the happiness of gods during the day and experiencing the suffering of hell at night, and so on. Hell is like a seat, like a wall, like a mortar, like a tool, like a tree, like a broom, and so on. The shape of the body is also uncertain, in various ways. The basis of the object of focus (Sanskrit: ādhāra, meaning "foundation") and the conclusion are the same as before. This is the twelfth object of focus. At this time, one should also generate certainty through the "Whisperer" and the biography of "Noble Sangha Protector" (497), and so on. Second, contemplate the suffering of the pretas. The preliminary and the object of focus are the same as before. And think like this: I am not born in hell. If I am born as a preta, will there be happiness? There is no happiness there either. There are two types of pretas: those who live in fixed places and those who wander around. The first is five hundred yojanas below the ground, where there is a city called Preta, which is the capital of Yama, the Lord of Dharma, the leader of all pretas. In that vicinity, there live countless (498) pretas. The wandering pretas wander in the sky, on the ground, and underground, in countless numbers. If someone with clairvoyance observes, wherever they go, it is filled with pretas. They cannot even find a place to walk and stay. Among these pretas, only a very few with great magical powers are slightly happier. All the others are very miserable. The "Great Mindfulness Sutra" says that there are thirty-six types of pretas. If summarized, they can be divided into three types: those with external obstacles, those with internal obstacles, and those with obstacles to food and drink (499). Those with external obstacles are: they cannot find food and drink for many years. They see a pile of food from afar, but when they go near, it is like there is nothing there, they see emptiness. When they go to the bank of a great river, it turns into gravel and sand dunes. When they go to a tree full of fruit, it turns into a dry tree, and so on. Some pretas are
