It's not coming joyfully, but descending involuntarily. It's not dying happily, but dying with intense suffering. It's not having a clear understanding of the afterlife, but thinking of wandering aimlessly in an unfamiliar land. When one's own death (473) arrives, body and mind separate. This body either hides in the ground, becoming a corpse for worms, or is thrown into the water, becoming food for fish and otters, or is burned in the fire, becoming a handful of ashes, or is left on a mountain or plain, becoming something for birds to peck at. Eventually, after a few days, not even a trace remains. Such is the end of the body that is now cherished. Since the mind, carrying the burden of karma, must go to a place where it is uncertain where it will be born, is there now no way to avoid practicing Dharma? Is there still a way to do it and then postpone it (474)? Using these to restrain oneself, just as if having the determination to practice pure Dharma right now, begin to practice Dharma and persevere, and one will also happily spend one's life. Others will also say that he has practiced pure Dharma, and will spend their lives enviously, so one must place hope in this. For this, one must practice Dharma, one must gain stability. One must become accustomed to it, one must become proficient, but stability has not been obtained. If one encounters misfortune, one's own mind cannot be controlled, one cannot persevere in Dharma, one goes against Dharma, and one will also regret it, (475) others will also criticize, and there is a danger of dying miserably. Since there is no way to go that way, one now engages in pure Dharma, persevering until death, not expecting others to envy, and being happy oneself, one repeatedly makes this vow. For all practitioners of Dharma today, this antidote is crucial. This completes the instruction on impermanence. The eighth contemplation. Third, contemplating the suffering of the lower realms, which is divided into the suffering of hell, the suffering of hungry ghosts, and the suffering of animals. (476) The first is, the preliminary and subsequent practices are as before. I have no right to stay in the human realm for long, thinking that death is truly frightening. Thinking carefully, there is nothing too frightening about death itself, because dying is not enough, one must involuntarily take rebirth, so this

If one is afraid, and does not do good deeds but accumulates much evil, one will be born in the three lower realms. One thinks, "How will I become famous?" This is the gateway to all objects of contemplation on the suffering of the lower realms. Next is contemplating the suffering of the hot hells. The summary is: Punarjivana (藏文:ཡང་སོས་,梵文天城体:पुनर्जीवन,梵文罗马拟音:punar jīvana,汉语字面意思:Rebirth), black thread, Samghata (藏文:བསྡུས་འཇོམས་,梵文天城体:,梵文罗马拟音:,汉语字面意思:Crushing), wailing, great wailing, extreme heat, and Avici. The location of all the hot hells is a ground of burning iron without mountains or valleys, where flames about a cubit high constantly burn. The mountains, valleys, or ravines are covered only with cinders. There are molten copper, boiling water, or molten lead, and extremely hot springs with corrosive salts, and rivers and lakes of similar kinds. The trees are also made of burning iron, etc. It is filled with cruel birds, predators, karmic rakshasas, and many Yamaraja. It is said that the intermediate beings born there, driven by rain and wind, experience great cold, and due to the force of karma, see the place of the hot hells. Knowing that they will go there, they run out of craving and are born in that place. Moreover, ordinary fire is seven times hotter than sandalwood fire, and the fire of Punarjivana Rebirth) is seven times hotter than that. Similarly, it is said that the upper hells are seven times hotter than the lower ones. All beings in hell have sharp, clear, and quick minds, and their bodies are soft, tender, and youthful. They have little patience in both body and mind. Therefore, they suffer even more. In those places, all limbs such as hands and feet grow like thorns in an instant, as if waking from sleep. All hells are of spontaneous birth. Most spontaneously born beings are born in this way. The characteristics of the different sufferings are: In the Punarjivana Rebirth) hell, hatred arises between beings as if seeing an enemy or butcher. Whatever they take in their hands becomes a sharp weapon, and when they strike each other, they are broken into many pieces. They faint and fall as if dead for a while. A cold wind comes from the sky and the sound of "Be reborn!" arises, and they are reborn and fight as before, endlessly dying and being reborn. In the black thread hell, the Yamaraja draw many black lines on the bodies of the hell beings.
