There is no leisure. There is absolutely no one who can add time to life. Time does not stop for even a moment, it flows from life, so with each passing moment, one gets closer to death. With each passing day, one gets even closer. With each passing month, one gets especially closer. With each passing year, one gets even more especially closer. Therefore, death comes quickly. If I must practice the Dharma, and still think that it is okay to wait until I am old and take my time, then in this short life, there is no such leisurely room. For example, at the age of sixty (462), when one is in their prime, they pass away without having practiced the Dharma. When one is old, even if they have the mind to practice the Dharma, the strength of body and mind is exhausted, and there will be no progress. Half of the remaining time is spent in sleep. Furthermore, being controlled by various meaningless things such as food and clothing, and going and staying, and wandering, even if one has great desire and diligence, the amount of time truly spent practicing the Dharma will not be long. If I want to quickly realize the Dharma that those holy beings realized after great effort, then for this short life, there should absolutely be no thought of procrastination, laziness, or abandoning it halfway (463). One should think like this. It is very important to contemplate the reasons in this way and meditate repeatedly. The fifth point of contemplation. The second point is to contemplate that there is no certainty when death will come. Not only is our lifespan generally short, but there is also no certainty when death will come. If one is lucky, one may live to sixty or seventy years old, which is due to the karma of previous lives. But most of us may not live that long. Even if we do, it is not to be counted from today. Half has already passed, or most has already passed. There is also the possibility that the karma of previous lives only brings thirty or forty (464) years of life. The Lord of Death has already arrived at the door. There is no opportunity to spend a long time with the enemies, relatives, wealth, possessions, retinue, friends, happiness, suffering, and idle talk of this life. Whatever one does, one must do it quickly, as it is said: The earth, Mount Meru, the ocean, the seven suns, all these sentient beings burned by fire, even ashes will not remain, what need is there to mention extremely fragile humans? Like this, this collection of body, flesh, blood, and pus is so fragile, the breath does not

Like the unstable autumn mist, it is unknown when it will disappear. The mind (465) has not gained freedom. There is no certainty about anything, so it is unknown when one will die. As it is said: "It is not right to sit comfortably thinking that one will not die just today. The time when I will cease to exist, that will definitely happen." Meditate like this. Nagarjuna said: "The causes of death are many, the causes of life are only a few. Those themselves are also causes of death, therefore, always accumulate Dharma." As it is said. External causes, such as people and livestock and things, etc., belong to sentient beings, and cliffs and fire and water, etc., belong to the external world and elements (466). Internal body has four hundred and four kinds of diseases, etc. In short, for the causes of death, there is nothing that it cannot do. If not dying is considered a cause of life, such as food, clothing, shelter, medicine, etc., but unsuitable food and wrong medicine, etc., all these causes of life will also become causes of death at some point. In the midst of adverse conditions like a violent blizzard attacking the body and life, I exist, thinking that I do not know when I will die. This is the sixth point of meditation. The third point is to think that at the time of death, things that are not Dharma are absolutely useless. As it is said, Shantideva said: "When one is seized by the messengers of Yama (467), what use are relatives, what use are friends?" Like this, at the time of death, even if there are many possessions, one cannot take even a sesame seed. Relatives, friends, servants, retinue, lords, officials, etc., even if the foundation is large, one cannot take even the lowest slave or a child, and one has no power to make him follow. All these are the nature of separation, thinking that it is absolutely useless, meditate with disgust. Apply the same to enemies, relatives, happiness, suffering, good words, bad words, etc. Then, if they do not follow, who will follow? Thinking, the two, good and bad deeds, that one has accumulated (468) will follow. The evil deeds that have already been committed cannot be left behind, they always bring harm. The good deeds that have been accumulated will also benefit oneself, they will not be left behind. Chos ldan rab 'byor also said: "Except for good and evil, all beings will turn away from you, no one will follow you, know this and think well." Think like this. In that case, one will definitely die, soon.
