Among sentient beings, those who fall into the lower realms are extremely numerous, like the dust of the great earth. Those who are born in the higher realms are very few, like the dust on a fingernail. Furthermore, (454) hell beings are like specks of dust on the great earth; hungry ghosts are as dense as a blizzard; the place where animals are submerged is like the dregs of strong alcohol in the great ocean; scattered animals are as numerous as to fill all the earth, mountains, rivers, and sky. The beings of gods and humans, compared to them, are like stars in the daytime. Among them, generally speaking, human beings are few; especially the people of Jambudvipa are few; and especially those who practice Dharma with a human body are like stars in the daytime. Therefore, now it is imperative to strive in Dharma practice. The reason for this is that among sentient beings, those who commit sinful deeds are (455) extremely numerous, without limit; those who perform virtuous deeds are, in general, very few. Among virtuous deeds, those who uphold morality that can lead to obtaining a human body are extremely rare. Therefore, a human body is difficult to obtain. On top of that, one must also possess the ten endowments and encounter the Dharma, and accumulate much merit, so such things are extremely difficult to obtain. However, due to past circumstances, one has accumulated great merit once, so now one has obtained this leisure and endowment body. At this time, one should contemplate striving to practice Dharma. The third contemplation is complete. Here, some (456) say "difficult to obtain" in a metaphorical way, and such a statement is only to show a metaphor of rarity, so there is no need for a separate contemplation. Again, the preliminary and subsequent practices are as before, and after remembering the reasons mentioned above, at this time when one has obtained such a rare human body once, one must accomplish a great task. If one wishes to obtain the perfect happiness of samsara in life after life, one can also accomplish it effortlessly by relying on this human body. If one wishes to achieve the Hearer's or Solitary Realizer's enlightenment that liberates from samsara, there is no difficulty at all now. If one wishes to achieve unsurpassed enlightenment (457), it is easy to do and easy to accomplish at this time. If one does not obtain such a human body, not to mention liberation and Buddhahood, one cannot even accomplish the perfect happiness of samsara, so now we

One should contemplate, thinking that it is necessary to take the essence from this moment onwards. Similarly, if obtaining a human body once is spent meaninglessly, it would be very regrettable. As it is said in the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra: "Having obtained such leisure, if I do not cultivate virtue, there is no greater deception than this, and there is no greater foolishness than this." As it is said, deceiving oneself is no greater than this. It is like going to a treasure island and returning empty-handed. Having obtained a precious human body once, which can accomplish any special wish, but doing nothing and letting it go to waste, this seems to be a great fault of one's own. So much time has been wasted in the past. From today onwards, one should repeatedly think that one must strive in the Dharma without wasting time. Furthermore, if one thinks that one cannot give up the happiness and activities of this life, then even in this world, if there is a long-term happiness, one should not look at the temporary happiness of a few days or months of leisure, but strive to achieve that long-term happiness. Similarly, in order to achieve the happiness of lifetime after lifetime, one should not be attached to the activities of this life, but strive in the activities of the Dharma. One should think like this. As it says: "This leisure is very difficult to obtain. Having achieved the purpose of human life, if one does not accomplish benefit in this, how can one obtain perfect abundance later?" Thus, one should think that it is difficult to obtain a human body and that obtaining it is meaningful. This is the fourth point of mind training. Second, contemplating the impermanence of death is divided into three points. First, contemplating that death is certain and swift. As it says in the Sutra: (460) "As many as have come and will come, all will leave this body and go, and the wise should realize that all will perish. One should abide in the Dharma and practice diligently." As it is said, wherever one abides, one cannot escape death. Friends and companions also cannot escape death. All beings on earth who have come before have died. All who will come in the future will also die. All who are actually present now, none are liberated from death. From the day we were born until today, how many of our relatives have died? How many neutrals and enemies have died? Their (461) death does not mean that I have the assurance of living long. In general, death is
