When to die is uncertain. At the time of death, nothing else is of any help. Only the excellent Dharma can benefit endlessly from before death until the end of life (469). One should resolve to strive to practice the Dharma immediately. This is the seventh contemplation method. Now, contemplate the Dharma of impermanence of death, which is called the five root sentences. First, think about things not staying and changing. Second, think about the many deaths of others. Third, repeatedly think about the many causes of death. Then, contemplate how one will change at the time of death. Finally, think about how one will change after death. This is what should be done, that is, from our birth to death, the continuum of the body is always changing and flowing. I was like that when I was young, like that in childhood, like that in youth, and now I think it is like this. And, (470) getting closer and closer to death. Thinking that nothing can help, use reason to make the heart feel weary. Recall from now on, in the past, in this place, such a person has died, in that place, such a person has died, count them one by one in detail. Think about how many people older than yourself have died, and how many people of your age and younger than yourself have died. Compared with the people who are alive now, there are more people who have died. Moreover, not many of them can live to a ripe old age, most of them die untimely. I am also such a law, unable to transcend such a nature. It was very fortunate that I had not entered their ranks before (471). Before death, one must practice the true Dharma. Have you heard or seen other people or animals die? Have you seen the changes of youth from children to the elderly? Even without death, you see that the strong become weak, the weak become strong, the rich become poor, and so on. Whatever you see or hear, you should clearly remember impermanence, my body, my family, my possessions, etc., are also of this nature, and also of this law. Then, as before, think about the many causes of death, for (472) all the things that appear in front of you, you should think that these things may become the cause of my death, and now I don't know what will happen. At the time of death, if one dies with an unwholesome mind, then there will be suffering and terror such as the karma of cutting off life. One should abandon such a death.
