Because it holds various things, it is called "consciousness." The consciousness of the five senses is that eye consciousness holds form, ear holds sound, nose holds smell, tongue holds taste, and body holds touch. In this way, because of recognizing and knowing these objects, it is held as consciousness. Furthermore, the mind, the Alaya consciousness, is neutral. The afflicted mind is unwholesome. The consciousness of the mind fluctuates between wholesome and unwholesome. The Lankavatara Sutra says, "The mind is always neutral, the mind changes between the two, and the arising of consciousness is also wholesome and unwholesome." Therefore, the wholesomeness of the mind is the ten virtues. The unwholesomeness of the mind is the six root afflictions and the twenty secondary afflictions. Therefore, the mind fluctuates between wholesome and unwholesome. The consciousness of the five senses is neutral (745). Likewise, the Samadhiraja Sutra says, "The mind is neutral, the afflicted is unwholesome, the mind is both good and bad, and the five senses are neutral." So it is said. The basis of secret mantra is the four empowerments. The Wisdom Manifestation says, "The basis of the tantra is the four empowerments, because it is the basis and support of the generation and completion stages." The Secret Dakini says, "The tantra is the nature of the four empowerments, and what is said and what can be said become the tantra." So it is said. These show the basis of how to abide. Then, the nature of the method, or the path of union, signs, similarities, etc., are to be shown. What are those? The brief display of the path and the detailed explanation. First, the Dharma of the factors of enlightenment, and the indistinguishability of illusion and dream, are shown. The Eight Thousand Verse Prajnaparamita Sutra says, "Sons of the gods, those who have mindfulness, are like dreams, like illusions. Likewise, the right abandonments, the miraculous feet, the faculties, the powers, the limbs of enlightenment, and the eightfold noble path are also like dreams, like illusions. Sons of the gods, the ten powers of the Tathagata (746) are also like dreams, like illusions. Likewise, the four fearlessnesses, the four analytical knowledges, great love, great compassion, and the Buddha.

The eighteen unmixed qualities of the Buddhas are also like dreams, like illusions. From the Later Tantra of the Arrangement of Vows: Secret Lord, the internal and external objects of the five senses, all distinctions, the basis is the mandala, and the dependent deity, understand them as illusions. Thus, these bases and dependents, know that they are inseparable from the dharmas of the path to enlightenment. Thus, these bases and dependents are non-dual with illusions and the dharmas of the path to enlightenment, they cannot be made into two. Thus it is said. Furthermore, transforming into the supreme path, with devotion to the guru, one traverses the bhumis and paths in months and years. In the Manifestation of Wisdom it is said: The stages of the bhumis and paths, with devotion to the guru, are traversed in months and years. If one does not separate from the guru's appearance, one dwells inseparably with the Buddhas. Thus it is said. In the Arrangement of Vows it is said: With unwavering devotion for six months, Vajradhara will attain the bhumis. Thus it is said. It is also said thus in the fifty tantra sections. Furthermore, taking all appearances as abiding in the five families (747) as the path and meditating on them, not allowing the elimination of other appearances, is abiding in the samaya of secret mantra. From the Arrangement of Vows of the Five Families: Whoever eliminates obscurations, it is desired that they abide in the samaya of the five families. One should know all the shapes of appearances as the five mudras. One should know the various colors as the five families. Likewise, the five elements, the five aggregates, the five afflictions, and the various sentient beings should also be known as the five families. Thus, shapes, colors, the five elements, the five aggregates, the five afflictions, the various sentient beings, and the five families are non-dual, they cannot be made into two. Or, even what is generated by ritual, the appearance aspect of the self-arisen deity is the generation stage, the emptiness aspect is the completion stage, the nature is inseparable is union. In the Manifestation it is said: The deity body that purifies the ordinary, arises from the appearance aspect, and the completion stage is from the emptiness aspect, this is the way of teaching inseparability. Again, in that same text it is said: Phenomena are inseparable from appearance and emptiness, generation and completion and union, there is no dharma that is not generation and completion, this is the way of teaching enlightenment (748). The clear appearance of the deity is the nirmanakaya, bliss is the sambhogakaya, non-conceptualization is the path of the dharmakaya.
