So! The Alaya is the seed of all things. On the Alaya, accumulating the habits of virtue, non-virtue, and neutrality, it becomes a seed. From that, the various forms of the Alaya are the place of all consciousnesses. The Alaya, possessing various habits and the seed of all things, from there, from the seed of the previous habit, the later one arises, from the essence appearing. From the previous, previous habits, for the sake of the later arising, it is a seed. How are those habits accumulated? In the Dense Arrangement, it says: Children use circular images as signs, from that realm, there is no beginning. Bad situations, responses, and the causes of karma, accumulate habits without beginning. Thus, how do the Alaya and habits without beginning exist (741)? In the Essence of Clear Light, it says: Just like gold and verdigris, so are the habits of the Alaya. Also, like a stone at the bottom of the water and fish scales. In the Ornament, it says: Just as the stones at the bottom of the water are completely covered by fish scales, similarly, the consciousness of the Alaya should be regarded as having defiled habits. Thus it is said. Maturing into habits on the Alaya is when, on the Alaya, from the subtle habits of virtue, non-virtue, and neutrality, it matures into grossness, each maturing into the forms of the six realms. In the Essence of Clear Light, it says: From the maturing of habits between virtue and non-virtue, one wanders in the six realms. How is the Alaya established as consciousness? The Alaya is known as the nature of emptiness, clarity, and light, and from the aspect of awareness, it is the Alaya consciousness. In the Earth Chapter, it says: The Alaya consciousness is the clear and non-conceptual consciousness, knowing as consciousness, the consciousness itself is clear and non-conceptual. Therefore, in the Alaya consciousness, not clinging to the existence of external objects, so the scope of clinging is completely cut off. Moreover, since it becomes the basis for all of samsara and nirvana, there is no difference from purity and otherness (742). In the Ornament, it says: There is no difference from purity, the Alaya does not become different. If it is different from purity, the Alaya would become impermanent. In the Essence of Clear Light, it says: The Alaya becomes the basis of all things, therefore, it is the basis of purity. Other sutras also say the same. From that realm of time without beginning, it is called the "Base Realm." In the Lankavatara Sutra, it says: Without beginning

Suchness is the realm, the basis of all dharmas. Because it exists, all beings can attain nirvana. Or it is the Alaya, or the Tathagatagarbha. From the Uttaratantra Shastra: The realm of beginninglessness, because it exists, all beings can arise in nirvana. Or it is the Alaya, or the Tathagatagarbha. From the Ornament Sutra: It is the basis of all kinds of grounds, the Tathagatagarbha is also good, that heart-nature is also the word of Alaya, thus the Tathagata proclaims. The fame of heart-nature Alaya, the evil-minded cannot know. Or the consciousness of grasping aggregates, is the basis of the body, the basis of everything, called mind-support. From the Earth Chapter Sutra: Consciousness thus holds this body and takes it, therefore it is also called the consciousness of grasping aggregates. Because it is the basis of this body, it is called Alaya. Because it is not revealed, it is also called sentient being, because all consciousnesses arise dependent on it. Thus it is said. Thus, in beginningless time, awareness, realm, store, Alaya, suchness, dharmadhatu, heart-nature, dharmakaya, unborn, Alaya consciousness, sentient beings, the basis of all-pervading, luminosity and emptiness, unrevealed, the house of awareness and light, the basis of abiding, etc., the sutras say, the names are inconceivable. In tantra, the continuum of cause, the continuum of basis, the continuum of essence, the continuum of support, the continuum of all, the continuum of beginninglessness, the continuum of heart-nature, etc., many names are proclaimed. Thus, in the sutras and tantras, the names of Alaya are proclaimed to be inconceivable. Not being confused about the meaning of the names, being skilled in the secrets of Alaya, mind, and consciousness, is not being confused about all the Buddha's teachings and understanding them. Thus it is said in the Earth Chapter Sutra. The afflicted mind is grasping the Alaya consciousness, the nature of awareness, luminosity, and emptiness, as a self that is not an object of focus, this is the afflicted mind. The mind consciousness, because it holds external and internal dharmas or objects, is called mind consciousness. From the Lankavatara Sutra: The mind is the Alaya consciousness, the ego-mind is the afflicted mind, the object of which
