Just as the great Bodhisattvas of the past generated the mind of enlightenment, so too, I, who am called so-and-so, from this time forth, until I reach the essence of enlightenment, will generate the mind of unsurpassed, perfectly complete, great enlightenment. I will liberate those sentient beings who have not been liberated. (681) I will free those who have not been freed. I will release those who have not been released. I will lead to Nirvana those who have not attained Nirvana. Repeat this three times. Explain the precepts of the aspiration mind, as appropriate, either in detail or in brief. The many precepts and benefits that appear in the Sutra Requested by the Noble Avalokiteshvara, the Seven Dharmas Sutra, and the Tree Ornament Sutra, etc., should be learned in detail from those Sutras. Thus it is said. Then, make prayers as appropriate, and (682) conclude: By this virtue, may all beings, etc. Say this and so on. Again, make offerings to the Three Jewels. Make offerings to the teacher. This, known as the ritual of generating the mind, is the ritual of the aspiration mind. Since this ritual does not require examination of the vessel, nor does it require the eight vows of individual liberation as a preliminary, it can be given to all who need it. This is the mind generation transmitted from Maitreya. It is said that another ritual of mind generation composed by the teacher, the Noble Asanga, exists in India. That ritual is not from within the Ratnakuta, but is compiled from another Sutra called the Bodhisattva Pitaka (683). Its intention is also present here. It is arranged as detailed in the ritual of mind generation composed by the glorious Atisha. Second, the ritual of taking the Bodhisattva vows: Those that extensively explain the Bodhisattva's training are the Sutras of the Great Vehicle, so one should listen to many Sutras. Alternatively, listening to the Bodhisattva Bhumi or the Compendium of Trainings, etc., is also very excellent, as it gathers the essence of all the Great Vehicle. One should definitely obtain at least one reading transmission or the end (684) of a Sutra such as the Noble Jewel Cloud Sutra or the Akashagarbha Sutra. The previously taught graded instructions

Even having heard the essence of the Great Vehicle through diligent practice, there is no way to avoid hearing a single Great Vehicle sutra through the means of expression. Next is the actual procedure for taking the Bodhisattva Vows: Offerings are arranged before the Three Jewels. After prostrating three times to the teacher and joining the palms, say: 'Teacher, I wish to receive the pure vows of a Bodhisattva from you. If there are no obstacles, please listen and grant a little for the sake of compassion towards me.' Thus, one should request three times (685). If the words are memorized, the student should make the request himself. Otherwise, one should repeat after the teacher or a friend. Then, the teacher says: 'Son of good family, listen. Do you wish to liberate those beings who have not been liberated, to free those who have not been freed, to give breath to those who have not breathed, to lead to complete nirvana those who have not completely passed into nirvana, and to not let the lineage of the Buddha be cut off?' The student replies: 'Yes, I wish to.' The teacher then says: 'Then, you (686) must make your bodhicitta firm and make your yidam firm.' And asks: 'Is it not for the sake of competing with others?' 'No.' 'Was it not forced upon you by others?' 'No.' Thus, questions and answers are made. Then, offer the offerings with verses including most of the offerings. Praise and prostrate as appropriate, such as 'Protector, great compassionate one.' Then, with respect, the supplication for encouragement to the teacher is as follows: 'Please, teacher, quickly (687) grant me the vows of a Bodhisattva that I have taken.' Repeat three times. The teacher says: 'Is the name this? Son of good family, are you a Bodhisattva?' The student replies: 'Yes.' 'Have you made aspirations for enlightenment?' 'I have.' Next is the main part, the teacher says: 'Son of good family, listen. Do you wish to receive all the foundations of training for all Bodhisattvas and all the vows of all Bodhisattvas from me?' 'I wish to receive them in that way.' Next is the actual procedure of the ritual, the teacher says:
