Hoping to be the first. Practicing discipline to denigrate others without abandoning attachment from the heart, and to uphold one's own side. Whether it's being alone, or in retreat, or practicing asceticism, or being a gardener, or being a monk who desires food, or taking monastic vows for fame, or pretending to be arrogant. (666) Hoping that all the people in the caves will develop faith in oneself, hoping that oneself will become a victor, acting as if temporarily conceding defeat, etc., are also methods of achieving worldly power by using Dharma as a pretext. Emptiness and compassion are contradictory. Those are like food mixed with poison. From the very beginning, worldly people have completely degenerated in both thought and action, which is the most reprehensible, but it has not become an object of false goodness as if mixed with spiritual practice. For the antidote to those, one must constantly remember the thoughts of a person of small capacity. Obstructing attachment to the happiness of gods and humans in the future, because one has not turned away from the happiness of samsara, (667) so one pretends to give charity, pretends to keep morality, and although one does some orderly virtuous deeds, if one only desires the happiness of future lives with food, clothing, enjoyment, residence, children, relatives, servants, and complete power, then one goes against emptiness and compassion. For that, one must repeatedly meditate on the thoughts of a person of medium capacity. Even if the mind has turned to Dharma, if one is still only focused on one's own benefit, then it is contradictory to emptiness and compassion. Therefore, one must meditate on equality and exchange of self and others. Moreover, it is important to know that one should not only remain at the level of understanding, but one must clearly focus on one's own body and mind. (668) These instructions are explained in detail in Mind Training. The Bodhisattvacharyavatara and the Shikshasamuccaya also elaborate on this. Gyaltsab Je said, "The very nature of equality between oneself and others, finding others more precious than oneself, thus knowing the meaning of others better than oneself, what is one's own benefit, what is the benefit of others?" Although one repeatedly understands emptiness, it does not truly exist. Saying "like an illusion" has become a formality and has not grasped the key point. If coarse discriminations of enemies, friends, wealth, speech, etc., still (669) exist, then it is the opposite of emptiness and compassion, therefore, one should regard one's own body, mind, possessions, enemies, and friends as illusory.

It is most important to cultivate a firm conviction of happiness from the depths of your heart. This is also one session. Furthermore, the difficulty of finding leisure and opportunity, the impermanence of death, the suffering of samsara, karma and its results, faith in the Dharma, loving-kindness, compassion, the mind of enlightenment, and meditating on the two selflessnesses—these can be meditated on sometimes in order, sometimes in reverse order, sometimes individually, and sometimes mixed (670) and randomly, within each day or each session. Sometimes focus on what is most harmful to the mind and should be abandoned, and sometimes meditate on what feels easy to meditate on. This is also one session. In daily practice, mainly meditate on four aspects: remembering impermanence and death, being cautious by contemplating the meaning of karma and its results, generating compassion for all of the three realms of samsara, and resting in equanimity in the state of freedom from elaboration. Meditate on the others as a supporting practice. Rely on a virtuous guru or good friend who practices this Dharma. Reading or listening to (671) the sutras during breaks can also enhance the effectiveness of meditation, generate certainty in the Dharma, and generate faith and prayer. In particular, it is crucial to observe, persevere, and focus on the meaning of each volume of the 'Precious Garland' related to the teachings of the Kadampa masters' 'Stages of the Path.' This is also one session. The latter four aspects are for learning about daily practice, eliminating obstacles, and enhancing effectiveness. It is not necessary to specifically divide the stages of practice, but there is no conflict even if you do. The third root section: The method of attaining the unsurpassed fruit of enlightenment from this is to understand by extensively listening to the great treatises (672). It is not enough to explain it in detail here. The essence is, as stated by Master Aryadeva: "Morality and giving are for the benefit of others, Effort and patience are for one's own nature, Meditation and wisdom are the cause of liberation, But all meanings are accomplished by compassion." And, "These seven branches, without exception, At once perfect the perfections, The realm of inconceivable wisdom, The Protector of the world will surely be attained." As it is said, by generating the mind of enlightenment and practicing the six perfections such as giving, one will naturally not turn one's mind to things other than the Dharma (673), and faith in the Three Jewels and in karma and its results will arise.
