I prostrate to the one who has attained the ultimate meaning of benefiting others. Whose impartial wisdom and compassion are equal towards all. I prostrate to the kind lamas. You are the lamas who represent the way things are. The lamas who reveal the state of being reside within. The characteristics of one's own mind lama are as follows: It does not arise from causes, it is spontaneously accomplished by its own nature. It is not destroyed by conditions, it is free from all antidotes. It has no coming or going, it is unchanging in the three times. It transcends the limits of expressing existence and non-existence. There is no object seen by the five senses. Although it is non-existent, it is the source from which various things appear. Even if you look and try to fix it (316), you cannot identify it as this. Even if you leave it without searching, its own nature appears in various ways. It is not influenced by the power of good and evil actions. It is superior to all and has no attachment to anything. Because it is separate from all, it is the essence of all. Because it is separate from the mind, it is clear to the meaningless mind. From that which is impartial, various impartial things arise. Although they arise, they are not definitely on any side. Thus, that which is not limited to being only this. As it is, that very thing is one's own lama. If one speaks of the conduct of the lama, it has the following characteristics: That lama has no near or far, so there is not a single sentient being that is not pervaded by it. That lama, because of the purity of his aspirations, there is no one who has not become his family. That lama, because of his great compassion, there is not a single one who has not been placed in the state of the primordial Buddha. That lama (317), because his actions are powerful, he enters into all of samsara and nirvana and controls them freely. That lama has no change, so even if you look at it wrongly, the meaning remains. I have never been separated from that lama for a moment. Although I have been with him for a long time, it is difficult for anyone to see his face. That lama has no passing away, so it is wonderful that he has obtained eternal protection. To such a self-mind lama, look at the face of knowing oneself by oneself. Pray with freedom from doubt and hesitation. Practice devotion by leaving it uncorrected in its own place. Serve by constantly abiding in its nature. Offer food of clear emptiness without grasping. Offer drinks of realizing that memory and distraction are inseparable. Offer clothes (318) of knowing appearances and sounds as illusions. Spread a cushion of uncontaminated bliss underneath. Offer a crown that is inherently present without searching. Offer offerings without grasping at whatever arises. In the all-knowing, self-grasping-free bedroom, samsara and nirvana

Surrounded by a retinue without discrimination, abiding continuously in the three times, and constantly uttering the instructions of spontaneous self-appearance. How wondrous, the very mind is the Lama! Again, being held by compassion, the kindness is immense. The yoga practiced in past lives has a great karmic connection. Even so, not abandoning with compassion, how wondrous! By relying on the Lama in that way, the blessings of the Lama arise in this way. Liberated from the mire of samsara without fleeing. Arrived without going to the Buddha-ground. Understanding that there is no good or bad in samsara (319) and nirvana. The difference between Buddhas and sentient beings is whether they are realized or not. If the nature of mind is realized without error, and if certainty manifests, it is called a Buddha. The qualities of that one are beyond the limits of expression. Otherwise, even if one relies on a Lama, it will be like this: Because the nature of mind is not realized as it is, the knowledge arises that grasps onto what is not as what it is. Following after, one engages in the activity of suffering. That is what is labeled as a sentient being. Now, one's own guarding is done by oneself. Not following after samsara, weary of the past. Not cultivating cessation, but great effort. The nature of mind, having taken its own ground, abides naturally. This nature of mind, without anything to be identified as this, (320) not understood by the unlearned mother, arises through learning this. Now, again, it is perfected through this understanding of the characteristics. If the way of perfection is shown as it is, it is like this: Emptiness is self-existing, no need to seek the Dharmakaya. Whatever appears is self-arising, no need to negate the Rupakaya. The nature of mind is self-moving, no need to fabricate the three Kayas. Since the root of samsara is cut, no need to abandon it. Since one's own mind is Buddha, no need to hope. Since it is primordially so, no need to meditate with the intellect. If you also act like this, wouldn't it be good? Those realized ones who look at the mind without distraction, if they are free from the mind of looking, how could it not be good? The great meditator who constantly meditates without separation, if the meditator is liberated in their own place, how could it not be good? The practitioner who constantly accomplishes enlightenment, if they understand spontaneous accomplishment (321) without meditating, how could it not be good? The yogi who guards without fabrication, if they settle their own mind, how could it not be good? Although many qualified Lamas have been relied upon, each Lama has a different saying. All of those ultimately converge on the mind. Then, to that very Lama who is one's own mind, I have seen the face, heard the voice, and requested many instructions.
