O! The venerable Lama was born in the Year of the Rabbit, and benefited beings for seventy-two years. In the later Year of the Tiger, according to the Chinese calendar, on the eighteenth day of summer, when auspicious stars converged, at noon, he manifested the manner of passing into Nirvana. Then (419), offerings were made to the remains for seven days, and the face of the remains was viewed. The next day, on the night of the cremation and feast, the precious Acharya teacher came and said, "I will also arrange the ashes properly, so please come and gather again tomorrow." Then, when the remains were moved, a great earthquake occurred. When the remains were cremated, the whole valley was filled with fragrance, and in the clear sky, a multitude of rainbows appeared. Rain of flowers fell, incense wafted, and celestial beings played music and sang. Then, all the deities of the mandala of the five tantra divisions appeared on his head. Countless Buddha images and relics appeared from the ashes. The disciples from U-Tsang and Kham, the patrons male and female from Zhang-yol, and all those gathered there, were offered large cups of tea. Now, the golden stupa and the golden image inside, and the paintings, etc. (420) are enshrined there, becoming a place of worship for gods and humans alike. This biography of the Lama's passing into Nirvana was written with reverence. May this merit lead all beings as vast as space to the feet of the Lama Buddha. The seven steeds of the form body are fully developed. He dispels the darkness of beings and shows the supreme path. I prostrate to him who is pure like the sky! From the vast ocean of tantras, he takes the wish-fulfilling jewel of ripening and liberation. He grants the desires of the fortunate ones. I prostrate to the king of empowerment! On the snow mountain of complete accumulation of the two accumulations, the stream of nectar of the two wisdoms flows. The two purposes are accomplished, the glory of samsara and nirvana. I prostrate to the one whose activities are accomplished! Therefore, my lama, the king of dharma of the three realms, the eldest of the bodhisattvas, the one eye of all beings including gods, the unequaled lord of the three worlds, the lamp that dispels the darkness of ignorance, the jewel that brings forth what is needed and desired, the great ship for those who wish to cross over, the helmsman for those who have entered the path, the guide for those who desire liberation, the great root for those who truly connect the lineage of those to be tamed, this realized one, known by the name Shangtonpa, is undoubtedly the great Vajradhara, and I have a definite understanding that I have no doubt about this. It is also said in this way to the pure Dharma friends and to most ordinary people. The body of appearance and emptiness is unborn, the speech of sound and emptiness is inexpressible, the mind of clarity and emptiness is without thought. O Lama, who knows all activities! Who can dare to speak of all your biographies? Therefore, remembering the supreme Lama, I will briefly describe here a part of your good deeds. (425) Having faith in the teachings, he became a renunciate. With pure hearing and thinking, he cut off the imputations. He relied on the supreme Lama and meditated single-pointedly. He brought his experience and realization to the end, and reached the end. He acted as a hidden yogi of the accomplished ones. He placed the fortunate ones on the supreme path of ripening and liberation. From the next life of going to the Lama, he will benefit beings, and in the next life, he will be the beginning of the prophecy. Although you have no faults in your body, in order to dispel the thought of permanence and to encourage the lazy ones to do good, you passed away peacefully with wonderful signs.
