He was a great logician. Later, he became devoted to Lama Galo and requested teachings. He dismissed all his attendants and practiced alone. It was said that there was a great accomplished one, a Bodhisattva, who possessed extremely important teachings, so he went to the place where that accomplished one was. When he arrived at the place where that accomplished one was residing by the pond, it coincided with an initiation ceremony, but the ceremony had not yet begun. Arriving at Sto Gor (153), he said, "I would also like to request an initiation and teachings." The Lama asked, "Whose disciple are you?" He replied, "I am a disciple of the Shangpa Kagyu." The Lama said, "To get off a horse and ride a donkey, how can that be?" The Lama said, "There is no one better than Lama Shangpa in Tibet now, I cannot be your teacher." He said, "I am very eager no matter what, please grant me initiation and teachings." The Lama replied, "Okay." Then, the great Geshes who gave him the initiation were: Nyanren Choseng, Kymo Tsulpak, Yornen, Lama Zhang, Tonbum, and others, six in total. They said, "Lama Shangpa's unique doctrine has not been understood, how can it be established?" Regarding the two truths, conventional truth and ultimate truth, there are distorted conventional truth and correct conventional truth, and these two are not consistent in Tibet. Regarding ultimate truth, merely cutting off one side of elaboration is the ultimate truth of nomenclature; being separated from all causes, conditions, results, benefits, and harms (154), and not being within the reach of consciousness, is the non-nomenclature ultimate truth. In the Hundred Thousand Verses Prajnaparamita Sutra, it is said, "In ultimate truth, there is no karma, no maturation of karma, no defilement, and no purification." Therefore, for the ultimate truth that has not been established, those who consider themselves to be wise men who have achieved ultimate truth have made a mistake. Those Geshes said, "You are a disciple of Lama Shangpa, you seem to know how to uphold the doctrine." Lama Aseng said, "Regarding the Kagyupa Lama's ultimate truth of being neither beneficial nor harmful, I also felt uneasy at first, but now I have a complete understanding. If you feel uneasy again, ask me, and I will answer." The Khampa translator Tonbum, a very knowledgeable person, said, "The nature of ultimate truth is one of being neither beneficial nor harmful, but apart from ultimate truth, consciousness will produce benefits and harms. Therefore, by realizing ultimate truth, which is the nature of reality that is free from all elaborations, one can attain Buddhahood, and that is the root of benefit (155)."

In a place called Sasam, the teacher said: Lama Shangpa was a learned, disciplined, and highly intelligent person. He consulted with Indian pandits and accomplished masters, asking, 'What is the ultimate view of being neither beneficial nor harmful?' The ultimate is the nature of reality, free from all elaborations. First, it is ascertained through hearing; in the middle, it is made certain through wisdom arising from contemplation; and finally, it is ascertained as it is through wisdom arising from meditation. If one realizes in this way, one might think that it is helpful for attaining Buddhahood. But it is not so; the only thing that is helpful exists in the true conventional truth. Shiwala said: 'The ultimate is not the object of the mind; mind and speech are conventional.' This is in accordance with his view. Because the ultimate of benefit and harm, acceptance and rejection, has not been established, there exists only that which transcends the realm of the mind. He said that he had been contemplating this. Then, during the actual evening, Vajra (156), at the time of the teacher's empowerment, a non-artificial devotion arose, thinking, 'This is the actual Buddha.' After receiving the empowerment, for a full twenty days, he requested all the instructions. Among the two paths of maturation and liberation in Secret Mantra, the maturing empowerment relies on painted and colored powder mandalas, and the four empowerments are bestowed completely. He said that both of these are in complete accordance with the mandala of Lui pa. In terms of the path of liberation, there are two stages: the generation stage and the completion stage. In the generation stage, there are two: complete contemplation of the Lui pa mandala and simultaneous arising complete contemplation. In the completion stage, it includes practices of channels, winds, and body exercises, namely, six unions and two channel connections, three essential points and two channel connections, and all those completion stages were requested. That summer, in Gyerre, I stayed with the teacher and meditated on some vase breathing. Then, Teacher Aseng, mainly focused on retreat practice, because he was bothered by many people, he retreated to a completely solitary place, and vowed not to speak Dharma for more than thirteen days (157) a year, so it seemed there would be no opportunity to meet him. In the autumn, I went to Bur and stayed for four days. Because there was a pleasant monastery in the juniper forest of Bur, I asked who lived in that monastery. The answer was that there was a lama named Bur Gom Nagpo, a disciple of Jere Chungpa, who was a holder of pith instructions.
