Compassion is contrary to malice, and deceiving those who hope for help is also contrary. Therefore, endure harm and repay with good, this is heartfelt advice. Some are swayed by parents, officials, or relatives, while others are dominated by desires, wealth, or power, leaving them no time for sacred Dharma practice. For these, skillfully guide them to virtue, this is heartfelt advice. All who practice Dharma are afflicted by strong adversities and the harms of the eight worldly concerns. If antidotes are not applied to tame the mind at such times, one cannot learn Dharma when needed, this is heartfelt advice. The great river of self-grasping, unless completely uprooted from its source, the ocean of suffering will never dry up. Therefore, conquer the enemy of self-clinging, this is heartfelt advice. The nature of mind is always clear and luminous, but obscured by temporary stains. These stains are adventitious and not inherent. Through correct observation, you will see that these stains are temporary, thus realizing emptiness, this is heartfelt advice. It cannot be expressed in words, nor is it within the realm of thought. Although the lama cannot directly point it out, when you let it be in its natural state, you will see it nakedly. This is each individual's own awareness, this is heartfelt advice. Clinging to the seer and the seen is a dualistic view. Even if this view seems good, it is still a fabrication and cannot be grasped by the mind. This view of abiding in the awareness of one's own nature, if absent, is said to be a defect, this is heartfelt advice. In the realm of realization where defilements are exhausted, all phenomena that appear can be regarded as the appearance and nature of conventional truth. And the nature of Dharma is established as ultimate truth. Therefore, it is taught that the two truths are inseparable, this is heartfelt advice. In this way, one can represent the union of appearance and emptiness, awareness and emptiness, clarity and emptiness, bliss and emptiness, emptiness, compassion, and the inseparability of samsara and nirvana. Also, conceptual thought is understood as Dharmakaya, this is heartfelt advice. To uphold the teachings, do not be content with merely hearing. Just hearing will not lead to seeing the meaning; meditation is key. However, meditating without hearing is also fruitless. Therefore, combine hearing and practice in their natural state, this is heartfelt advice. As stated above, I am the crown ornament of accomplished ones—Drukpa, whose tradition is widely known in the world. I, the perfect eastern monk from the prosperous land of Tibet, am proclaimed as Pema Karpo (White Lotus). These twenty-eight heartfelt advices, called 'The Awl of Mind', were spoken by the great scholar of Myangtod, Kunga Chodar, from the source of accomplishment, Ralung Thel, as he prepared to go to the Ngon Ga College of the glorious Dechenpa monastery to serve as a teacher. This great monastery is located in the enchanting Metok Dangtrok, on the fragrant slopes of Mount Riwoche Drugzin, a dwelling place for ascetics and a place for contemplation. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This instruction was given at Yangchen Nangwa in Gyi Khangpa on the fifth day of the ninth Hor month in the Iron Male Dog year. Quintessential Instructions: The Marrow of the Heart, Given to Some Students Setting Out to Meditate in a Place Where Experience and Realization Arise as One, Tsari Tra. Homage to the Lama, the Lord of All Families! Inconceivable, far beyond all expression, Even the all-knowing are impoverished in describing it as it is. Like the bliss of a young woman's attachment to her lover, It cannot be shown by anyone, but experience it in your own awareness. Friends, the agent of all things, What action is done by whom? By your own mind. The mind, though sought everywhere, is never found. That which is not found is labeled 'ultimate meaning'. Like the shimmering hairs seen by those with cataracts, Though those with clear eyes strive with hundreds of efforts, It is not seen; that itself is called 'correct seeing'. It is just as the world speaks of it. Since there is not the slightest birth, There is also no cessation or abiding. Likewise, it is neither empty nor existent, So how could emptiness possibly exist? Alas! Without obtaining the blessing of the Lama, How can one experience co-emergent wisdom? Therefore, with great devotion and cries of distress, Ordinary awareness will surely awaken in the heart. Alas, alas, friends, all actions, Become the cause of meaningless suffering. Therefore, abandon all meditation and fabrication, And rest in the natural state of non-thought. The mind that scatters outward to objects, How does it merge like water into water? Look at where it comes from, where it stays, And where it disappears; it is without root or basis. Therefore, apart from this appearing and sounding, There is no other emptiness, Padmakara said. Transform the roles of samsara and nirvana that fall upon your face, Into one great bliss! Even the slightest attachment, as fine as a hair's breadth, Has caused all this great suffering. Therefore, abandon what you desire and crave, And rest evenly like a flowing river, remember! The mind that is realized to be free from grasping, Is realized to be everything; nothing else is found apart from it. Therefore, there is nothing to abandon or adopt, And with the exhaustion of hope, fear has fled far away. Just as for a fire spreading in a forest, A violently scattering wind becomes a friend. Likewise, the power of these objects that constantly bind beings, Liberates them. Unexamined, extremely delightful relative truth, Is like an elephant conjured by illusion. Appearing but not real, not real but appearing, This is the truth of its own nature. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
