When the two accumulations are complete, the deities are pleased. Therefore, the deities bestow two kinds of accomplishments. As stated in the *Pancavimsatisahasrika*: 'If one urges them with mantras, the deities will perform actions.' The *Intentional Prophecy* states: 'The term 'mantras' means urging the very nature of reality.' The *Gur Tantra* states: 'Whoever obtains the sequence of mantras, will attain enlightenment.' 'Buddhas and Bodhisattvas also hold the practice of mantras as primary.' 'By diligently meditating on the Vajra mantra, one obtains incomparable wisdom.' The *Perfection of Wisdom Sutra* states: ' कौषिक (Kauśika, कौषिक, Kauśika, Kausika), if one trains in this knowledge mantra, the great Bodhisattva will manifestly awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, and will obtain the wisdom of omniscience.' Therefore, the above all explain the importance of mantras. The Essence of Mantras Thus, explaining mantras, there are seven aspects: essence, definition, classification, arrangement of syllables, collection of mantras, ritual of recitation, and the sequential practice. First is the essence: Extremely subtle, the indivisible Vajra nature of mind, inseparable from skillful means and wisdom. The subtle is that very indestructible bindu (drop), stained by habitual tendencies, which is established as the great emptiness syllable. The coarse is the five great emptiness syllables, and the consonants that thoroughly transform from these five syllables. As the *Ali Kali* states: 'By thoroughly examining the vowels and consonants, the utterance is correctly explained as recitation.' If asked, what are vowels and what are consonants? What is renowned in the world and established as letters, vowels are fourteen or twenty-two, divided into one hundred and thirty-two. Consonants are thirty-three or thirty-four, divided into one thousand three hundred and fifty-six. The *Pancavimsatisahasrika* states: 'The main ones, such as A, and those such as Ka, are the self-nature of the mantras of aggregates and elements.' 'By individually gathering bliss, it shows the meaning of accomplishing speech.' 'Accomplishing mantras is just that, and omniscience is likewise mantras.' In the Tantras, on top of the fourteen vowels, adding anusvara and visarga, due to the power of the element of space, they are summarized as sixteen vowels. Or the five self-born syllables of great emptiness, plus the five syllables that transform their qualities, totaling fifteen syllables. Again, lengthening these syllables, there are fifteen more, totaling thirty. Adding the visarga bindu, there are thirty-two. In terms of consonants, there are five classes, plus eight final letters, plus one ' क्ष (kṣa, क्ष, kṣa, ksha)', totaling thirty-four. Again, there are five classes, and सा पा ष शा (sā pā ṣa śā, सा पा ष शा, sā pā ṣa śā, sa pa sha sha), संप्रासारण (saṃprāsāraṇa, संप्रसारण, saṃprāsāraṇa, samprasarana) of ha ya ra va la kha (藏文,梵文天城体,梵文罗马拟音,汉语字面意思) supplementing, plus ड ढ य र ल व (ḍa ḍha ya ra la va, ड ढ य र ल व, ḍa ḍha ya ra la va, da dha ya ra la va), totaling forty.

It also speaks of eighty types (of classifications). Regarding the place of origin and elements of these (classifications): Understanding wisdom through the letter 'ཧ' (Ha), namely ཨ་ཀུ་ཧ་ྈྐ་ (A ku ha), is the space element, originating from the throat. Understanding through the letter 'ཡ' (Ya), namely ཨི་ཙུ་ཡ་ཥ་ (I tsu ya sha), is the wind element, originating from the palate. Understanding through the letter 'ར' (Ra), namely རྀ་ཊུ་ར་ཥ་ (Ri tu ra sha), is the fire element, originating from the crown of the head. Understanding through the letter 'ཝ' (Wa), namely ཨུ་པུ་ཝ་པ་ (U pu wa pa), is the water element, originating from the lips. Understanding through the letter 'ལ' (La), namely ལྀ་ཏུ་ལ་ས་ (Li tu la sa), is the earth element, originating from the teeth. The subsequent two anusvara and visarga are the elements of wisdom, considered to be under the power of the great elements. As stated in the Fifth Book of the Hundred Thousand Verses: 'ཨ་ཀུ་ཧ་ (A ku ha) etc. originate from the throat,' until 'Thus, the six elements each have their categories.' Regarding the minor elements, the first of the five categories is earth, the second is water, the third is fire, the fourth is wind, and the fifth is the space element. As stated in the Fifth Book of the Hundred Thousand Verses: 'Again, within each category, the nature is divided into five types,' until 'The categories become five types.' From the perspective of dividing the six elements in this way, one should understand from thirty-six types to one hundred types, etc. (of classifications). The antagonistic relationships of these elements are: water is antagonistic to wind, earth is antagonistic to fire, fire is antagonistic to water, and wind is antagonistic to earth. The ways of becoming friends and neutral are: wisdom and space are friends to all (elements). The friend of wind is fire, and the neutral is water. The friend of fire is wind, and the neutral is earth. The friend of water is earth, and the neutral is fire. The friend of earth is water, and the neutral is wind. As in 'Antagonistic, friendly, and neutral, spoken for the benefit of sentient beings,' etc. If the first letter of the practitioner's name and the first letter of the mantra being recited are antagonistic sounds of the great or small elements, then it is the enemy of life, causing death. If the consonant is antagonistic, then it is the enemy of the body, causing illness. If the vowel is a friend, then it is the friend of life, which is very good. If the consonant is a friend, then it is the friend of the body, which is general. If both the vowel and consonant are neutral, then it becomes neutral. As stated in the Fifth Book of the Hundred Thousand Verses: 'Vowels speak of the enemy, friend, or neutral of life. Consonants speak of the enemy, friend, and neutral of the body. Without a doubt, the enemy of the vowel will take the life of the practitioner. One with the characteristic of the enemy of the consonant will cause illness, etc.' That is, if the first letter of the name is water and the first letter of the mantra is wind, then it becomes an enemy. If the first letter of the name is wind and the first letter of what is being recited is water, then it becomes an enemy. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
