As obtained by Ra don, and in the 'Ocean of Dakinis' (Kha' 'gro rgya mtsho): 'In the Bhagavad-goddesses, the five tantras gather. Actions and so on to the ultimate, how is it to abide thus?' The teacher Śāntipa says in 'Distinguishing the Three Vehicles' (theg pa gsum rnam par gzhag pa): 'The vehicle with profoundness and vastness is transformed into five types: Action, Conduct, Yoga, Great Yoga, and Unsurpassed Yoga.' The Indian Vajrapāṇi says: 'The means tantra has five: Action Tantra, Conduct Tantra, Yoga Tantra, Anuttarayoga Tantra, and Unsurpassed Yoga Tantra.' The commentary on the 'Explanatory Tantra Vajra Garland' (bShad rgyud rdo rje 'phreng ba'i 'grel pa) says: 'The tantra taught by the Bhagavan is gathered by the combination of the five ritual tantras, namely, the divisions of Action, Conduct, Yoga, Great Yoga, and Yoginī Tantra.' The 'Lamp Illuminating' (Rab tu sgron gsal) also says: 'The Great Vajradhara taught five types of mantra treatises based on the differences of intention, latent tendencies, elements, and habitual patterns, namely, the divisions of Action, Conduct, Yoga, the Lord of Yoga, and Yoginī Tantra.' The teacher Abhaya also says this, and many other paṇḍitas also hold this view. The Mother Tantra of Anuttarayoga is separated from the Great Yoga or the Means Tantra of Anuttarayoga because it shows profound and wonderfully contradictory means to the world. Both mainly show the profound yoga of the union of means and wisdom, so they are also gathered into one Great Yoga Tantra. In the 'Overview of Mantra Meanings' (sngags don rnam gzigs): 'Yoga Conduct and Action Tantras, as well as the way of the pāramitās.' Thus, the tantras are shown as three categories. The commentary on the 'Vajra Amrita Tantra' (rdo rje bdud rtsi'i rgyud kyi 'grel pa) also says: 'All tantras are Action Tantras, Conduct Tantras, and some Secret Tantras.' In summary, these can be summarized into two categories, outer and inner. The 'Vajra Heart Ornament Tantra' (rdo rje snying po rgyan gyi rgyud) says: 'The ritual of outer repulsion of two, secret and wisdom and innate wisdom, the ritual of union and separation, the recitation of the food offering vajra, the ritual of fierce accomplishment, abiding and accomplishment of the mandala. The secret essence is ten. Mandala, samadhi, mudra, posture...' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The manner of reciting and abiding, the rituals of homa offerings, and the order of retraction, these ten are the external reality. As the ten realities spoken of in the Yoga Tantra, explaining the reason for the ten external realities, everything below the Yoga Tantra is external. For example, visualizing the protective wheel of the Ten Wrathful Deities to dispel obstacles, writing the protective wheel to dispel obstacles, the secret empowerment, the wisdom jñana empowerment, killing enemies with the ritual of union, the ritual of Torma, Vajra recitation, and if not accomplished, then performing fierce or forceful blessings, which is the ritual of killing deities, consecration, and the practice of mandala, etc., explaining these as the ten secret realities. Therefore, the tantras that expound these are secret or internal, thus, the Anuttarayoga Tantra is the inner mantra. Acharya Abhaya said: 'The outer and inner Vajradhara are like Vajra, hold the successive transmissions in your heart. The rituals such as mandalas, the teacher has extensively explained in the two tantras.' Dividing the tantras into two, namely the Kriya Tantra and the Charya Tantra as external, and considering the Yoga Tantra and Anuttarayoga Tantra as internal, this is evident, namely the three vehicles of outer, inner, and secret. Manjushri explains: 'The excellent Dharma, the external is the Kriya Tantra, etc.' Among them, the Kriya Tantra is the Samaya Raja Tantra and the Taming Bhuta Tantra, etc., in which, actions such as bathing and silence are external rituals, and visualizing images as deities. The Charya Tantra is the Abhisambodhi of Vairochana, etc. The secret is the Yoga Tantra, etc., the Yoga Tantra is the Tattva-samgraha, etc. The Anuttarayoga Tantra is the Guhyasamaja Tantra, etc. The Anuttarayoga Tantra is the Yogini Tantra, as it is said. Secondly, focusing on the fourfold division: The Samputa Tantra says: 'Playfulness, viewing, hand gestures, and embracing in pairs are the four forms, residing in the four tantras like a worm.' That is, being satisfied by viewing the Paranirmitavasavartin, etc., as a remedy for attachment, merely viewing the male and female deities and being satisfied, using the bliss of joy as the path, this is the Kriya Tantra. Being satisfied by the joy of playfulness, as a remedy for attachment, merely being satisfied by the playfulness of male and female deities, using the bliss of supreme joy as the path, this is the Charya Tantra. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
