Collection of Teachings by Omniscient Pema Karpo PK85: 'General System of Tantras: Captivating the Wise' General System of Tantras: Captivating the Wise Identifying Secret Mantras General System of Tantras: Captivating the Wise I prostrate to the lotus feet of glorious Drukpa Jampel Dorje! The activity of the supremely white Victorious One is like the abundance of camphor water, ultimately moistening with compassion. May the vajra-like playful dance in my mindstream become a treasure of nectar, blooming into countless lotuses. May that vast light, combined with equanimity, dispel the darkness of ignorance, becoming the source of all virtuous deeds. May that majestic and dignified Thupa's (Buddha's) moon-mirror, which soothes the minds of the wise, be worthy of prostration by all. Only that profound wisdom bears the secret burden of all the Buddhas. Fearing that it might be forgotten, I respectfully join my palms at the feet of the translator Marpa. Alas! The outer appearance of various explanations is tainted by the stench of ignorance, wrong views, and doubts, and is merely a landing platform for partisan bees. The earth of the Buddha's teachings has become turbid and unclear. At that time, those with fortunate confidence awaken from their slumber, and the power of compassion urges the clouds of the wise. With the strength of the rain of eloquent speech, it clears again, becoming like the vast blue sky. Our teacher, having attained the unsurpassed state of omniscience, turns the precious wheel of Dharma according to the different inclinations of beings, such as those who are detached, those who are broad-minded, and those who are deeply devoted, namely the wheel of truth, the wheel of pāramitā, and the wheel of mantra. These three wheels are described in 'The Lamp of the Three Wheels': 'What is the wheel of truth? What is the wheel of pāramitā? Likewise, what is the wheel of mantra?' Here, we will explain the wheel of mantra, including the identification of mantra, how it becomes Mahāyāna, distinguishing by classification and compilation, and establishing in order as divided. First, the identification of mantra: 'Mana' means 'mind,' and 'traya' means 'to protect,' so mantra means to protect the mind. Because it is a collection of tantras, it is said: 'Whatever arises in the mind due to the senses, objects, and conditions, that mind is called "man." "Tra" means to protect, liberating beings from the world. The vows and commitments that are taught, protected by all vajras, are called the practice of mantra.' It is also said: 'Man means wisdom.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thus, the wisdom that knows that very reality is called Tatra, which is the great compassion that protects the world. That which is inseparable from emptiness is mantra. As stated in the Root Tantra of the Kalachakra: 'The elements of body, speech, and mind, because they become protectors, therefore, the meaning of mantra, the sound of mantra, are unchanging emptiness and wisdom. Mantra arises from merit and wisdom, possessing the nature of emptiness and compassion.' Also, because it is not the object of practice for those who are not vessels, it is secret. Because siddhis are accomplished through the door of mantras and mudras, it is mantra. Because it is accomplished through secrecy, it is secret mantra. The Vajrayana has great fruit.' Also, the way of explaining the cause as the Paramitas and the way of explaining the result as mantras are inseparable, which is Vajra. Because one travels by this, it is Vajrayana. The meaning is that cause and effect are spontaneously accomplished. As it says in the Vimalaprabha: 'Vajra is that which is indivisible and indestructible. That itself is the vehicle, which is Vajrayana. The way of mantra and the way of the Paramitas, the nature of the result and the cause, become mixed into one.' Also, because it purifies the three poisons of desire, hatred, and ignorance, or because it is a vehicle with the characteristic of inseparability of body, speech, and mind, it is Vajrayana. As it says in the Guhyasamaja: 'Great desire, hatred, and ignorance, are well taught in the Vajrayana.' Also, 'Body, speech, and mind are extremely pure, I prostrate to the Vajrayana.' In the commentary, the Pradipoddyotana, it is explained as such. Also, emptiness, which possesses all supreme aspects, is the cause, and because it mainly shows the way of the Paramitas, it is called the Vehicle of the Cause. The great bliss that does not change is the result, and because it mainly shows the way of mantra, this is called the Vehicle of the Result. As it says in the Abhisamayalankara: 'Emptiness holds form as the cause, the result holds unchanging great compassion. Emptiness and compassion are inseparable, it is said to be called Bodhicitta.' Also, as it says in the Vajrahṛdayālaṃkāra: 'The emptiness of all dharmas, I say is renunciation. The cause of renunciation is that, and then by the power of aspiration, the nature of great compassion is the great result, arising without object.' Also, entering into the meaning of the Anuttarayoga Tantra, that is, body, enjoyment, place, and activity are completely pure. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
