Regarding focusing on the objects of the four mindfulnesses, the Great Translator said, 'Cause is the power to produce an effect. Differentiating it means intermediate patience, because the absence of birth and necessity is the cause of realizing the complete purity of body, speech, mind, field, and signs.' This is because they hold it to be so. In some cases, 'through the fruit' means lesser superior Dharma. This heroic samadhi has the fruit of benefiting sentient beings.' This is because they realize it. In the former, the fruit itself, without actual realization, differentiates the power of producing it. Here, the fruit itself is realized to actually exist in the object, and then it is differentiated. In some cases, 'through the essence' means lesser patience. 'Actually, the absence of essence itself exists conventionally.' This is because they realize it. In some cases, 'through the aspect of Dharma-nature' means the remaining nine, because they differentiate the ultimate. In another way, differentiating the characteristics of suchness as impermanence. As it is said, through the nine paths of union that do not eliminate the object, the ultimate and the characteristics of suchness are differentiated. In the lesser heat, the four truths are explained by dividing them into object and aspect. For the remainder, they are not divided in this way, but are spoken of by taking the aggregates and so forth in general. These objects and aspects are also included in application and subsequent attainment. At the time of equipoise, they are always of the nature of the Dharmadhatu. Among these, having four conceptualizations to be abandoned: The Great Translator said, 'The grasped is what is to be used by the self that exists imputedly or substantially, that is, food. The grasper is the one who uses it, that is, the eater. The first has two: the all-afflicted and the purified, that is, becoming the intermediate state of the self to be abandoned and accepted. The latter has two: substantially existent and imputedly existent.' These four are essentially the nature of the four that are in accordance with the part of ascertainment. It is said that when arising from these four, the minds of subsequent attainment, through the power of the four worldly equipoises, abide greatly through the four manifest ways of directing the mind. Among these, the object of the first conceptualization is the all-afflicted, which has the general characteristic and the particular characteristic. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nine. Thus, since there are nine afflictions in all objects, there are nine conceptualizations based on objects, which are attached to the characteristic of being edible. The object of the second conceptualization is purification, and there are also nine of these. Therefore, there are also nine conceptualizations based on its object. Among them, the first conceptualization of grasping is due to the power of meditating on the distinct purification from all afflictions, or certainly when contemplating the characteristics of all afflictions, purification is also actually included therein, so the conceptualization is also called focusing on all afflictions, and it can also be said that it focuses only on the object itself. The second conceptualization, because it ascertains the distinct purification from all afflictions, is called focusing on purification. Although the ninefold distinctions of these are not referred to as the number of the nine conceptualizations themselves, the treatise makers divided them into nine by following the characteristics of the object, since its object characteristic abides in nine. Alternatively, the conceptualization itself also cognizes nine characteristics, because for the subsequent mind, it is the nature of things to necessarily experience the object through the power of samadhi. The same applies to the two subsequent sets of nine.’ As it is said, the first grasping conceptualization is to cognize in relation to the Dharma that refutes the nine objects, such as the self of self-control. The second is also through the gateway of the nine objects, clinging to the mark of existence in the self imputed to the nine objects such as the aggregates alone, or grasping the mark imputed to the aggregates themselves and conceptualizing the self as imputed. The distinction of completely grasping in these is twofold: the skillful means of the virtuous friend, and the complete separation from the Dharma that is the opposite of that. Skillful means refers to: the mind that possesses all aspects of knowledge, individually and truly conceptualizing from impermanence and so on to peace and solitude without observing form and so on, and also showing these impermanence and so on to others in this way, not clinging to the supreme, thus enduring and desiring, not abandoning such a mind, not mixing with other vehicles, and knowing that the Dharma of emptiness and the Dharma of non-destruction are of the same nature. These are said to be the six perfections in order. Separation from the unfavorable side refers to the three causes of being separated from the mind that possesses all aspects of knowledge, and observing the object, and so on.
