One should understand all fifteen of the five paths and three grounds as they are established. For example, understanding the nature of the path and the manner of entering and traversing that path. A Bodhisattva, in order to place others on the path of a Shravaka (Hearer), needs to understand it, but in order to definitely become liberated from it himself, he does not cultivate it. The former is Svatantrika (Independent), the root of those paths; the latter is the path to be understood. Thus, (the text) clearly reveals the distinction between the path to be known and the path to be realized. Regarding the combination of this (five paths), Lo chen (the Great Translator) said: 'The combination that generates it is that, on the eighth ground and so forth, in a manner consistent with the part of definite liberation of the Hearers, by attending to worldly knowledge, it is similar to heat and so forth, therefore it is said to be heat and so forth.' Thus, the worldly mind of a Bodhisattva is merely likened to heat and so forth. Those Hearers, relying on discipline, through hearing and thinking about the Hearer's canon, and through doctrine and reasoning understanding the sixteen aspects of the Four Noble Truths, then cultivate the four mindfulnesses. In the four paths of application, they cultivate the four right abandonments, the four legs of miraculous power, the five faculties, and the five powers, in gradual order. In heat, peak, and forbearance, in small, medium, and large ways, they cultivate the sixteen aspects of the Four Truths of the three realms, such as impermanence and so forth. Starting from the medium, first abandoning the four aspects of the path, then cultivating twelve aspects. Then abandoning the four aspects of cessation, then abandoning the four aspects of origin, then abandoning one aspect of suffering, abandoning two aspects and then cultivating two aspects. If desire is strong, then cultivate the two aspects of impermanence and suffering as antidotes to laziness and pride; if views are strong, then cultivate the antidote of selflessness and emptiness, which are views of self and self-belonging. Then there is forbearance and the supreme worldly dharma, with the aggregates of suffering of the desire realm as the object, each moment being like that. The path of seeing is after the supreme worldly dharma, realizing the nature of the suffering truth of the desire realm, which is encompassed by the uninterrupted path, that very dharma-tolerance encompassed by the path of liberation, which is dharma-knowledge. After that, the uninterrupted path realizing the suffering of the upper realms is subsequent-tolerance, and its path of liberation is subsequent-knowledge. Similarly, applying it to the other three truths, therefore there are sixteen moments of mind. That is, by alternating the cultivation of forbearance and knowledge, forbearance and knowledge become the uninterrupted path and the path of liberation in order, as stated in the Treasury of Knowledge. The fifteen moments up to that point are the path of seeing, and all of these are on the same ground as the supreme worldly dharma. The path of cultivation is the desire realm, the four dhyanas, and the formless realm, in each of the nine grounds, abandoning the nine afflictions to be abandoned by cultivation. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It becomes the antidote to eighty-one afflictions. For the Ekacarins, by gathering and abandoning the afflictions of the three realms, nine wisdoms arise. The Path of Seeing and the Path of Cultivation are the seven branches of enlightenment and the eightfold noble path. The Path of No More Learning is the attainment and knowledge that the nine afflictions of the peak of existence have been exhausted. Such a path without outflows is called the discipline of a Shramana. It also relies on the outflow-free Path of Seeing and Cultivation, producing four fruits. The nature of the fruit is the Truth of the Path, the Path of Liberation. The Truth of Cessation and abandonment obtained thereby. Thus, the fruit is conditioned and unconditioned. That is, there are eight types of liberation paths abandoned by the Path of Seeing, and eighty-one types of liberation paths abandoned by the Path of Cultivation, totaling eighty-nine. There are also eighty-nine abandonments corresponding to these numbers. Third, the path like a rhinoceros horn has two aspects: nature and application. First, the nature has three differences: the difference of the fruit, the difference of nature, and the difference of support. First: 'To realize the self-born nature, even if taught by others, it is not needed.' This shows that one attains enlightenment without needing to be taught by others, and the word 'also' shows that others can understand even if one does not speak oneself. The former is the wisdom of meditative equipoise, and the latter is the wisdom of subsequent attainment, and both are said to be profound. A Pratyekabuddha generates that fruit in his own continuum, while a Bodhisattva teaches others through skillful means and wisdom, thereby enabling others to obtain that fruit in their continuum. The difference in nature is that its realization is superior to that of a Shravaka but inferior to that of a Buddha. Why? Because 'To abandon the thought of what is grasped, but not to abandon the grasping.' The difference in support is that the practitioner who cultivates to attain the path is of the Pratyekabuddha lineage, and the support for following the path is a Bodhisattva. Second, the application, the four parts of ascertainment, are distinguished by six aspects such as the object of focus. This itself is the difference in the means of generating the path of a Pratyekabuddha, which is the initial application. The latter is the following ascertainment between the eighth ground. The Pratyekabuddha is also divided into sharp, medium, and dull faculties, like a rhinoceros horn, and the classification of conduct and assembly is clearly explained in Shantipa's 'Differentiation of the Three Vehicles'. 'The cause of the rhinoceros horn for a hundred eons' refers to guarding the discipline of renunciation for a hundred eons, and hearing and thinking about the Shravaka's Vinaya Pitaka. Completing the parts of liberation, knowing that one must still take birth, in order to obtain self-birth there, one becomes wise. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
