How does one become peaceful a hundred years after enlightenment? It is obtained through proper acceptance. Due to the fame of the teacher, many who sought the Bhikshu (monk) state came, some fell into ravines, some were carried away by water, some were taken by wild animals, and so on. There were many obstacles to ordination. The teacher requested, 'My disciples come from afar and become weary, from now on, I will grant the Pravrajya (going forth) and Upasampada (full ordination) of the Sangha (community).' Thus, through the ceremony of four requests, he simultaneously granted Pravrajya and Upasampada. Among those who attained Upasampada through this ceremony, after a long time, due to the lack of Khenpo (preceptor) and Acharya (teacher), some became rude in their behavior, and the laypeople lost faith. The Tirthikas (non-Buddhists) mocked, and many sick people died without care. The teacher requested, 'My disciples should help each other, and for the sake of caring for the sick, the Khenpos and Acharyas should grant Pravrajya and Upasampada.' Thus, the Vinaya (code of conduct) was established. After the establishment of the Vinaya, one could no longer attain Upasampada through the previous ceremony. What is obtained through Dharmata (the nature of reality) existed even before the teacher's Parinirvana (passing away), as can be known from the Parivrajaka (wanderer) Subhadra attaining Upasampada through 'Come hither'. The previous ceremony did not require a Khenpo and Acharya because the disciples of that time had more of the three ripenings and fewer of the three obscurations. The three ripenings are: ripening of wisdom, naturally knowing what to accept and reject, without needing to be taught by others; ripening of merit, naturally engaging in the ten virtues and abstaining from the ten non-virtues; ripening of faculties, naturally not experiencing illness, and even if illness occurs, easily finding care and medicine. The disciples of the current ceremony are the opposite of this, so a Khenpo and Acharya are necessary. Kunkhyen Buton said: 'Having the one inclined towards the Khenpo prostrate to him, and then placing a cushion etc. in front, when performing the Upasampada, bless the robes and bowl. Except for the time of secret instruction, in all occasions such as requesting the Khenpo, receiving Upasampada, the Karma Acharya asking about obstacles, answering questions, and the actual performance of Upasampada, allow the one being ordained not to suffer from sitting crouched for a long time. Know that 'Pha gu' (ཕ་གུ་, pad gu, cushion) is a seat.' Here, my Guru (teacher), the great translator, said: India and Nepal... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Regarding the practice of both, it is said to be drawing on bricks. (Brick: ཕ་གུ་སོ་བཏང་བ་) The commentary (འགྲེལ་པ་ཤེས་རབ་བྱེད་པས་) also mentions laying bricks. There is also a corresponding term for brick in Sanskrit. (སྐད་དོད་ལ་ཡང་སོ་ཕག་གི་སྐད་དོད་ཡོད་དོ།) In order to completely avoid the improper act of laying grass on top, the Vinaya holders should understand it from the oral instructions. This is necessary. If the preceptor (མཁན་པོ) becomes another's preceptor one year after receiving full ordination (བསྙེན་པར་རྫོགས་), it is stipulated that one may not be another's preceptor until after ten years. Thereafter, even if elders who have reached ten years of age act as preceptors, they are not allowed because they cannot impart the oral instructions and do not possess any of the qualities mentioned below. Therefore, it is necessary to have one of the twenty-one qualities in five groups. Therefore, it became necessary to request someone with the two qualities of stability and wisdom to be the preceptor. Because I am capable of doing these, I made three prostrations in order to request the preceptor. Sitting as before. If it is the previous preceptor, say: 'Please, preceptor, consider.' If it is the instructor (སློབ་དཔོན་), say: 'Please, instructor, consider.' If it is another monk, then as before, request to grant me full ordination. This is the difference, speak auspicious words. Then, make three prostrations to bless (བྱིན་གྱིས་བརླབ་) the upper robe (སྣམ་སྦྱར). Make three prostrations to bless the upper garment (བླ་གོས), the lower garment (མཐང་གོས), and the alms bowl (ལྷུང་བཟེད), making a total of twelve prostrations. From here, at the place of blessing the alms bowl, the preceptor and the ordinand stand together with reverence. As explained in texts such as the *Butika* (བུ་ཊིཀ྄), the three robes are draped over the shoulder as before, and the manner of holding them is the same. This robe is the upper robe, which is sewn together from many small pieces of cloth. Thinking, 'I will bless this upper robe and hold it,' then say, 'Please, preceptor, consider. I, named so-and-so, am wearing this robe that is lawful and suitable, and now I bless it as the upper robe.' Repeat this two or three times. The preceptor should say, 'This is the means.' The disciple should say, 'Excellent.' This is the upper garment; 'upper' (བླ་) means above, it is the garment that covers the body. Thinking, 'I will bless this upper garment and hold it,' say 'upper garment' in place of 'upper robe.' This is the lower garment; 'lower' (མཐང་) means edge, it is below, it is the garment that covers the body. Thinking, 'I will bless this lower garment and hold it,' say 'lower garment' in place of 'lower garment.' This is the blessing of the sewn and stitched robes. If sewn... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
