'As a novice monk of this Sangha,' you will receive the vows of a novice monk. Then, I will also become your Upadhyaya (preceptor). After becoming the Upadhyaya, request the Upadhyaya to accept you. Remember these and repeat three times. Say 'Excellent.' Recite twice at the end. If you immediately receive the full ordination here, then there is no need to recite the time admonition. It is divided into two parts: the time admonition at the time of obtaining and the explanation of the precepts to prevent the loss of what has been obtained. For the first part, it can be understood by slightly changing the recitation when it is about to be explained. For the second part, the previous Upadhyaya will say: 'You must protect the precepts you have obtained well. If you do not protect them, the faults are great.' Some keep the precepts and are happy, and some keep the precepts and suffer. Those who keep the precepts are happy, and those who break the precepts fall into evil destinies. Therefore, just as the past noble Arhats guarded the ten branches, I will also learn to guard them.' Repeat this. 'Please listen, Upadhyaya. Just as the noble Arhats have abandoned killing for the rest of their lives and turned away from killing, so too, I (name) from this time onwards, for the rest of my life, abandon killing and turn away from killing. With this first branch, I follow the teachings of the noble Arhats, follow them, and do them.' 'Furthermore, just as the noble Arhats have abandoned taking what is not given, not practicing celibacy, lying, grain wine and cooked wine, which are places of intoxication and carelessness, singing, dancing, the sound of music, garlands, perfumes, ornaments and colors, high and large beds, untimely food, and receiving gold and silver for the rest of their lives, and turned away from receiving gold and silver, so too, I (name) from this time onwards, for the rest of my life, abandon taking what is not given, not practicing celibacy, lying, grain wine and cooked wine, which are places of intoxication and carelessness, singing, dancing, the sound of music, garlands, perfumes, ornaments and colors, high and large beds, untimely food, and receiving gold and silver, and turn away from receiving gold and silver.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, I will turn back from taking gold and silver. With these ten branches, I will follow the teachings of those venerable Arhats, I will follow, I will practice, I will do. The teacher should say that this is a method, and the novice monk should say 'Good'. Then, the workers should, as before, dedicate with auspicious wishes, and with 'Discipline is the law' and 'The suffering of beings is the only medicine', etc. Since ordaining as a novice monk is a personal act, it is fine for a Khenpo (preceptor) to accomplish it alone. This is the ritual for ordaining as a novice monk. Thus, when that novice monk reaches the age of twenty, the Khenpo or the monastic teacher should prepare the alms bowl and Dharma robes, and fully ordain him. For him, the previous or another Khenpo, if there are many monks, they should all gather together and be in harmony, or at least in other mandalas (dkyil 'khor), in the central region gather at least ten monks who possess the Dharma, and in the border region at least five. Arrange how many are to be ordained, give each of them a flower, and spread the seats for the workers behind the ordinands. The Khenpo should make three 'mthang shad' (a gesture or action in Tibetan Buddhist rituals), and pray thus: Please venerable Sangha listen. These beings seek full ordination from the Sangha. If they seek full ordination from the Sangha, then please the monk, the great virtuous friend so-and-so as the Karma Acharya (las kyi slob dpon, action teacher), the monk so-and-so as the secret teacher, and the monk so-and-so as the leader, request them to grant the vows of full ordination to these beings. If the matter is thus agreeable, please allow it.' Repeat three times. Make 'mthang shad', let each of the ordinands, the teacher, and the monks of the workers prostrate three times, scatter flowers, and then the Khenpo who is qualified should say thus: There are two ways to obtain full ordination: by obtaining it through Dharma nature and by obtaining it through proper acceptance. The first is: 'The Blessed One said 'Come', he possesses a shaved head and a body wearing robes, his senses are peaceful and tamed, and his body is covered by the Buddha's intention.' As the gods especially said, merely by the Blessed One saying 'Monks, come! Practice celibacy!', that person shaved his head, wore robes on his body, held an alms bowl and a water filter in his hands, and was fully ordained. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
