For ordination, three transformations are necessary: The transformation of symbols: abandoning the symbols of a householder and genuinely taking on the symbols of an ordained person. The transformation of thought: while living at home, one pursues the five desires, but after ordination, one should be content with little and know satisfaction. Moreover, one should emulate what is said in the ritual: 'The Shakya King being the chief, after he renounced, I too shall renounce after him,' one should learn from his example. The transformation of name: taking a name of the Sangha, such as Intelligence Peaceful Origin, Hidden Glorious, Glorious Fame, Glorious Light, and so on. After that, make three prostrations to the teacher, and report: 'Khenpo (Khenpo, Preceptor), please listen, my name is so-and-so, from this time onwards, until the end of my life, I take refuge in the Buddha, the supreme among bipeds, I take refuge in the Dharma, the supreme among the passionless, I take refuge in the Sangha, the supreme among assemblies.' The omniscient Pema Karpo (Kunchen Pedak Kar) in the Great Commentary on the Vinaya and Buton and others have said that the assembly should also prostrate to the Khenpo. 'The Bhagavan, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened Buddha, Shakyamuni Buddha, Shakya Lion, Shakya King, being the chief, after he renounced, I too shall renounce after him, abandoning the symbols of a householder, and genuinely taking on the symbols of an ordained person.' Repeat this twice or three times, and say 'Well said.' The above is the intermediate ordination ritual. After that, in order to enable him to approach the state of a novice monk (Dge Tshul, Sramanera), one should entrust a Bhikshu (Dge slong, fully ordained monk) to say: 'Please, so-and-so Bhikshu (Dge slong), grant the novice vows to this person.' That Bhikshu (Dge slong) should ask the Khenpo (Khenpo, Preceptor): 'Is it pure?' The Khenpo (Khenpo, Preceptor) replies: 'It is pure.' Then, the one who is suitable to be the novice's Acharya (slob dpon, preceptor) should say this: 'In this cycle of the three realms, there is nothing but suffering, one must be liberated from it. The real method of liberation is superior wisdom, and the cause of that is the superior training of the mind, and the cause of that is the superior training of discipline.' Just as when the sun is in the sky, daytime appears in the world, this is a result that comes from both day and night. Therefore, the previous ordination is only an intermediate process, not the act of vows. The lowest limit of ordination vows is the novice vow. It is the antidote to afflictions, the battlefield victory over the enemy of afflictions depends on discipline, as it is said in the scripture: 'The asceticism of a novice is like a newly built dam.' This also must be obtained through proper acceptance, and it requires the presence of conditions that prevent it.
