‘Is he not the father?’ ‘Is the northern sound not unpleasant?’ ‘Is the name repeated three times?’ ‘Is she not a woman who resembles a man?’ ‘Does she not possess characteristics like a criminal?’ ‘Is she not born from another place, with a different appearance?’ Thus inquire. If the answer is ‘yes,’ let her go. If the answer is ‘no,’ seize her. This applies to immediate ordination; if it is only to become a layperson, this is not necessary. After that, say this: ‘You must gradually enter the Dharma, just as one gradually climbs a great mountain, gradually enters a great ocean.’ As it is said in the sutras: ‘Do not take the Bhikshu vows without having fully taken the Upasaka (layperson) and Sramanera (novice) vows.’ Therefore, one must first take the Upasaka vows. This is obtained by taking refuge as the basis and vowing to become an Upasaka. Therefore, the meaning of taking refuge as the basis is: To regard the Buddha as the teacher, the Dharma as the true object of refuge, and the Sangha as the companion on the path of practice. The way to vow to become an Upasaka is to think, ‘I will take and keep the precepts of an Upasaka until the end of my life.’ For the one taking the vows, first visualize the image of the teacher, prostrate three times, thinking, ‘I request you to grant me the Upasaka vows,’ and then prostrate three times. After prostrating, kneel down in front of him, join your hands, and sit in a squatting position. Then say this: ‘Venerable one, please listen. I, named so-and-so, from this time forth, until the end of my life, take refuge in the Buddha, the best of bipeds; take refuge in the Dharma, the best of the passionless; take refuge in the Sangha, the best of assemblies. Please, Venerable one, allow me to be a layperson from now until the end of my life.’ Repeat twice. The third time, when reciting the refuge formula and ‘I,’ when reciting ‘to become a layperson,’ the Upasaka vows will arise in your continuum. At that time, we will also become the teacher. Therefore, keep this in mind and repeat the third time.’ Recite as before. The teacher is the means. The disciple answers ‘Good.’ Here, it is also necessary to recite the time for the Upasaka, because the Upasaka also needs precepts.’ Buton Rinpoche and others think so. Even if the vows are obtained, if they are not kept, great benefits will not arise.’ --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Therefore, one must guard against the great obstacles that may arise. In this regard, take refuge in the Buddha and do not worship worldly deities; take refuge in the Dharma and abandon harming sentient beings; take refuge in the Sangha and do not befriend non-Buddhists, nor live with those of differing views or improper conduct. The common trainings are four: rely on noble individuals, listen to the sacred Dharma, contemplate properly, and practice in accordance with the Dharma. In addition, there are the trainings of guarding the senses, taking vows as much as possible, having compassion for sentient beings, and diligently making offerings to the Three Jewels. However, these are merely the trainings of taking refuge. The training for a layperson (upasaka) is to abandon the four root downfalls and alcohol. If one feels it is difficult to abandon all of them, one should think: 'Just as the Arhats have abandoned these things to be abandoned with body and speech, and do not return to them in mind, so too shall I abandon these five things to be abandoned with body and speech, and not return to them in mind.' Then repeat after me: Venerable teacher, please listen. Just as the noble Arhats, until the end of their lives, have abandoned killing and turned away from killing, so too, I, named…, from this time until the end of my life, abandon killing and turn away from killing. With this first branch, I follow the training of the noble Arhats, practice accordingly, and act accordingly. Furthermore, just as the noble Arhats, until the end of their lives, have abandoned taking what is not given, sexual misconduct, lying, and intoxicating grain alcohol and distilled alcohol, which are places of recklessness, and turned away from intoxicating grain alcohol and distilled alcohol, which are places of recklessness, so too, I, named…, from this time until the end of my life, abandon taking what is not given, sexual misconduct, lying, and intoxicating grain alcohol and distilled alcohol, which are places of recklessness, and turn away from intoxicating grain alcohol and distilled alcohol, which are places of recklessness. With these five branches, I follow the training of the noble Arhats, practice accordingly, and act accordingly. State skillfully as before. This is for a layperson. Becoming a monastic is accomplished simply by requesting the Sangha, therefore, there is no need for a separate request now.
