In order to perfect the ordination ceremony of Pratimoksha vows, it is necessary to be free from four obstacles and possess five favorable conditions that facilitate practice. The four obstacles are summarized as: birth, existence, becoming special, and hindering the beauty of the support. Previously, the Khenpo (abbot) asked questions, and we answered, so we are confident that it is pure. The five favorable conditions are: the emanation body of the teacher, diligent study of the Dharma, and having monks who behave similarly to oneself as companions, all of which are already present. Immaturity of the continuum means that even if one has taken the novice vows, it cannot be considered that the continuum is mature. Therefore, even if one practices in this way, it can only be considered superficial beautification, because (during the ordination) it is reduced to less than three sentences, all of which are already present. The intention is: it is necessary to abandon the five determinations. The idea that one can cause harm to some beings and cannot abandon harm to some beings is the determination of beings. The idea that one can abandon what should be abandoned in some places and cannot abandon it in some places is the determination of place. The idea that one can only learn what should be learned in a certain month or year and cannot learn it at other times is the determination of time. The idea that one cannot abandon what should be abandoned in situations such as fighting, but can abandon it in other situations is the determination of circumstance. The idea that one can only protect this thing that should be abandoned and cannot protect other things that should be abandoned is the determination of branch. It is necessary to be free from these and to vow to uphold and protect the novice vows for life. The signs are having the three Dharma robes, a bowl, and a water strainer; if not, substitutes are also acceptable. The favorable conditions of the ritual are divided into the main practice and the subsequent practice. First is the main practice: prostrate three times to the image of the teacher. Thinking 'I request to take the novice vows,' prostrate three times. Then, as before, have him sit down, starting with taking refuge, because the (vow body) arises from the moment of promising to become a novice, so have him repeat these words. 'Venerable ones, please listen, I, named..., from now until the end of my life, take refuge in the Buddha, the supreme of the two-legged ones, take refuge in the Dharma, the supreme of those free from desire, take refuge in the Sangha, the supreme of the assembly. I request the venerable ones to accept me as a novice from now until the end of my life.' Repeat twice. The third time, when saying 'take refuge in the Sangha,' recite the refuge formula. 'I until the end of my life' is self-declaration, after 'becoming a novice' is other declaration. The sutra says: 'For example, when making other declarations here, it is like becoming a novice.' Therefore, from 'becoming a novice' onwards, and before that, from 'becoming a layperson' onwards, other declarations should be made. In other karmas, other declarations should also be made after the venerable ones accept, so check carefully. When declaring, it is like becoming a novice.
