Just as cutting off the head of a palm tree prevents it from turning green again, and prevents it from growing, expanding, and becoming wider. From now on, you should strive to guard your mind very diligently with mindfulness and awareness, avoiding what should not be done and what should not be practiced. How can one not engage in such conduct? One should say, 'I will not engage in such conduct.' Venerable one! Listen! The Blessed One (Bhagavan, title of the Buddha, meaning 'The Fortunate One') has condemned killing in many ways. Abstaining from killing is praised, honored, lauded, and commended. From now on, Venerable one! If you intentionally kill even a creature like an ant, what need is there to mention a human being or a being like a human being? Venerable one! The Blessed One, the Tathagata (title of the Buddha, meaning 'The One Who Has Thus Gone'), the Arhat (title of an enlightened being, meaning 'Worthy of Offerings'), the Perfectly Enlightened One (Samyaksambuddha, a fully enlightened Buddha), the Knower, the Seer, has declared: 'If any Bhiksu (Buddhist monk) intentionally kills a human being or a being like a human being with his own hand, or gives a sword, or seeks someone to wield a sword, or causes him to die, or praises death, and says to him: 'Hey, you wicked life, what is the use of this impure evil? Hey, it is better for you to die than to live!' Thus, with a mind of malice, desiring the death of another, and for the sake of obtaining robes, bowls, teapots, belts, etc., causes him to die in various ways, or praises death.' If that person dies as a result, then that Bhiksu has committed a Parajika (the most severe offense in Buddhist monastic rules, meaning 'Defeat'), and is no longer allowed to live in the community. If a Bhiksu does such a thing, he immediately ceases to be a Bhiksu, ceases to be a Sramana (Buddhist ascetic), ceases to be a son of Sakya (the Buddha's clan name), he will lose the status of a Bhiksu, his status as a Sramana will be destroyed, ruined, fallen, defeated. His status as a Sramana will be impossible to restore. Listen! Lying, the Blessed One has condemned in many ways. Abstaining from lying is praised --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Okay, please listen respectfully! Please praise! Please speak pleasingly! O fortunate one, from now on, even if you are joking, you must think that you should not lie knowingly. What need is there to mention deliberately claiming to have attained transcendent Dharma? O fortunate one, the Bhagavan, Tathagata, Arhat, Samyak-sambuddha, Knower and Seer, if any bhikshu has not realized and has not fully realized, but claims to have attained transcendent Dharma, attained the unconditioned path, attained special wisdom, attained the four fruits of a śrāmaṇa, knows the four truths, sees the four truths, touches the four dhyānas and dwells in them happily, but in reality does not, and claims 'I know,' 'I see,' if he wants to purify this transgression, whether asked or not asked at any time, he should say: 'O fortunate one, I said I know what I do not know, I said I see what I do not see, I am lying,' admitting that he is false, admitting that he is speaking falsely, so that he can get rid of arrogance. Otherwise, that bhikshu is defeated and cannot stay any longer.' This is what the Buddha said. So, what is 'knowing'? Knowing that suffering is impermanent, suffering, empty, and without self. Knowing that the origin is arising, etc. Knowing that cessation is cessation, etc. Knowing that the path is the right path, etc. So, what is 'seeing'? Seeing the gods, such as Indra, etc.; seeing the nāgas, such as small nāgas, etc.; seeing the yakshas, receiving offerings and tormas in the heavenly realm; seeing the garudas, such as the good-winged birds, etc.; seeing the kinnaras, who are musicians of gods and nāgas; seeing the amanushyas, who are very beautiful beings with animal and human forms; seeing the mahodarās, who are great nāgas; seeing the pretas, who are hungry beings with their feet facing backwards; seeing the flesh-eaters, who eat various kinds of meat; seeing the kumbhāṇḍas, whose limbs are like fruits, shaped like pots; seeing the putrid ghosts; seeing the ghosts with putrid bodies, wearing short skirts, emitting a foul odor; seeing the ghosts in the dust, or the flesh-eating ghosts living in the dust. Seeing these. The gods also see me. The nāgas, yakshas, garudas, kinnaras, amanushyas, mahodarās, pretas, flesh-eaters, kumbhāṇḍas, putrid ghosts, ghosts with putrid bodies, and flesh-eaters in the dust also see me. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
