For the eight root downfalls, mainly based on the occurrence of fundamental offenses, it applies to everyone. Transforming into root downfalls are named the eighteen root downfalls, plus fourteen material downfalls, and abandoning Bodhicitta (Enlightenment-mind). Adding the four root downfalls of a Bodhisattva, if not confessed within the time limit. Then, in supplication, in dreams, in front of the Holy Nam-snying (Omniscient Heart Essence Space). Confess, or recite the Sutra of the Three Heaps (Triskandha Sutra) three times day and night. Rely on the Buddhas and their retinues to pacify the sins. If abandoning Bodhicitta, then retake the vows. Under what circumstances will one not fall? Abiding here, there are four increases: giving, guarding, purifying, and increasing. In short, classified by body, enjoyment, and merit, it can be divided into four types, each further divided into three. To all sentient beings, giving the body, enjoyment, and the merit of the three times (past, present, future), this is giving. Abandoning bad friends and actions that harm the practice of Dharma. Staying away from demonic activities and bad friends that are contrary to the Dharma. The faults of a Bodhisattva include: forgetting Bodhicitta, confusion, displeasure, harsh words, these are root downfalls. Obstructing ordination, obstructing the path of unwholesomeness, obstructing the doing of good, being jealous of a Bodhisattva, Being angry with them, obscuring them, despising Bodhisattvas, abandoning the Dharma, slandering those who speak the Dharma, Disparaging them, these are faults. Relying on the twelve recollections, generating respect. From this arises peace, from this arises truth, from this arises wisdom as it is, therefore practice Samadhi (定). Seek meaning, be mindful and wise, act according to the Dharma. Discipline and Samadhi mutually increase each other. These two can accomplish the purification of one's mind. The trainings of a Bodhisattva are all contained herein, this is the root of all Dharmas. When one sees oneself (one's merits), one immediately feels joy and delight, this is the enjoyment of the body. Speaking with gentle, pleasant, and melodious words, this is the enjoyment of speech. Holding the mind with the peace of no-self. To avoid the need for medicine due to chronic illness and suffering, and to avoid attachment to clothing, these are the roots of afflictions. Therefore, remember the three places (body, feeling, mind) and the Four Mindfulnesses (四念住), use them well. These are guarding the body, using it well, moderately and reasonably. Guarding enjoyment is for maturing one's own benefit. Cutting off craving, not regretting, not boasting. For gains and respect, be fearful, abandon arrogance. Abandoning doubt about the Dharma, this is guarding merit. With the Four Powers (四力) counteract evil deeds, endure suffering, seek to hear the Dharma. Living in the forest, abiding equally, contemplating impurity, loving-kindness, and dependent origination, practicing the Four Mindfulnesses. Realizing emptiness, subduing afflictions. Enjoying with the body and correct conduct, nourishing with enjoyment and emptiness. Enjoying with emptiness and compassion as the core. Establishing these merits in the three purities. Increasing strength, being diligent, increasing the body, with emptiness as the core. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Given by the one with the essence of the Lord. Initially, diligently strive to increase enjoyment, and earnestly fix your mind. Placing compassion before you, increase virtue, acting as in the practices of Samantabhadra and others. Meditate on faith and so forth, and remember love and the Three Jewels. Constantly act for the benefit of sentient beings, giving Dharma, which is the cause for increasing Bodhicitta. Truly abandon, and the four: mindfulness, vigilance, and awareness. These are the summaries of the meaning of engaging in all things, spoken from the Compendium of Trainings, the tradition of Nagarjuna. Whichever of the two vehicles one rides, what difficulty is there in traversing to complete perfect enlightenment? From the Compendium of Disciplines, the Ornament of the Three Vows, the explanation of the discipline of a Bodhisattva, the second chapter is complete. The explanation of the discipline of the Thus-Gone One, the third chapter: Body, speech, and mind are held by skillful means and wisdom. The distinction between the vows of restraint and mantra vows is: As spoken in the Kriya, Charya, Yoga, and Anuttarayoga Tantras, In the latter three, they are explained as fourfold by the distinction of empowerment. Without action, one cannot abide in equipoise, One must receive from entrustment, subsequent permission, or empowerment, Whichever it may be. The empowerment here is: Water empowerment, mudra empowerment, crown empowerment, And merely the subsequent permission of lineage transmission. In the root tantra, Although five empowerments are spoken of, it is sufficient to bestow the water empowerment five times. Therefore, only these are taught in the tantra, And in some mandala rituals, it is proclaimed as in the Yoga Tantra. At that time, the vows are also the same as these. Generate great faith in the Three Jewels, Have faith in mantra, vidya mantra, dharani mantra, and assemblies. Particularly, generate special interest in the Mahayana. Respect the guru who has vows and spiritual friends. Make offerings to the deity at the appointed times, Strive to accumulate merit by making occasional offerings. Be diligent in mantra practices such as recitation. Especially rely on your own lineage vows. Protect the tantra, realize what is to be realized, and make the three doors of body, speech, and mind peaceful. Accomplish bathing and the twelve purifications. When reciting, do not be too fast or too slow, Do not make the sound too loud, nor too small. Do not be like speaking, nor be distracted. Do not omit hooks, flicks, heads, dots, or strong accents. Wherever the mind wanders, Quickly turn it back from there, And properly combine the letters of the mantra with offerings. Recite with one-pointed mind, and accomplish without hindrance. Do not hate the mantra deity and fellow practitioners. Do not worship other systems, do not fabricate your own mantras. Do not accept without permission, do not engage in exorcism and so forth. Do not use it elsewhere, do not give it to those without vows. Hand seals, vehicles, signs --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
