Killing, saying 'this Dharma relies on the written word,' not helping sentient beings' activities, not taking care of the sick, not relieving their suffering, not showing reason to the reckless, not repaying kindness, not dispelling sorrow, not giving what is desired, not doing the affairs of relatives, not coordinating with others, not praising others, not punishing those who deserve punishment, and if oneself has miraculous powers, not causing fear to those who should be feared, and so on. In short, in the *Bodhisattva-bhumi*, the Blessed One said, 'The faults of a Bodhisattva mostly arise from hatred, not from desire; this should be understood.' It should be regarded as having a deeper meaning. A Bodhisattva cherishes affection and compassion for sentient beings, and whatever they do is the action of a Bodhisattva; there is nothing that should not be done. It is unreasonable to think that what should be done would turn into a fault. A Bodhisattva's hatred towards sentient beings is not an action for the benefit of oneself and others, nor is it the action of a Bodhisattva. Like this, doing what should not be done is likely to turn into a fault. In the *Compendium of Trainings*, based on the above, the *Akasagarbha Sutra* also mentions that kings and those of royal lineage who have received empowerment mainly have five faults, ministers have five, and ordinary people have eight, totaling eighteen. If the five of the ministers are grouped into one category, there are thirteen. The first three are: stealing property, abandoning the Dharma, robbing those who hold vows or are immoral, committing the five heinous crimes, and wrong views, these five. The second is: destroying villages, cities, regions, towns, and countries, these five. The third is: speaking of emptiness to those of little wisdom, turning back from perfect enlightenment, abandoning individual liberation vows, abandoning the Hearer Vehicle and practicing the Great Vehicle, praising oneself and disparaging others out of jealousy, selling oneself for gain and honor, providing instruments of punishment to punish monks, and giving up the enjoyment of practitioners in order to read about peaceful abiding, these eight. In both systems of discipline, generating the mind to become a Hearer or a Solitary Realizer is said to be the cause of abandoning the aspiration for enlightenment, because this aspiration is even heavier than falling into a root downfall. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Others impose restraints, not abandoning the aspiration, it is only a branch offense, it was not said so, therefore it is only necessary to understand its concise meaning. As it is said in the 'Compendium of Trainings Self-Commentary': 'To the best of one's ability, without distinguishing between what is reasonable and unreasonable, to compile arbitrarily, or to reverse, or to leave it alone, or after distinguishing, to exceed what is appropriate, even if it is a Candala's (outcaste) slave, it is considered a downfall.' Not being deceitful, diligently exerting body, speech, and mind, not striving, in order to generate all happiness and joy of the present and future, not seeking its causes, not striving to abandon its obstacles with antidotes, these are considered downfalls. With small suffering and displeasure, generating the antidote that can counteract great suffering and displeasure, for the sake of accomplishing great goals, abandoning small benefits, this is called the image of downfall, but in reality, there is no downfall. For actions that are beyond one's ability, there is no downfall, because it is meaningless, so no precepts are established for it. If one strives for something that is beyond one's ability, it is an image of no downfall, but in reality, it will lead to downfall.' In short, these are the outlines of the Bodhisattva precepts, in detail, they can be explained in countless eons. Thus it was said. Therefore, if one commits a root downfall, even if the mind of concealment arises, it is different from the Pratimoksha vows. Confess sins with the four powers and retake the vows. Medium offenses are confessed in front of three Dharma friends, small offenses are confessed in front of one Dharma friend, thus one can purify sins, this is revealed from the Bodhisattva vows. In the 'Compendium of Trainings', it says: 'Pray to the Son of Star Light, summon the Bodhisattva Essence of Space (Namaka's Essence of Space).' Let him sit in front and allow confession. In reality, both purify sins through the confession of the four powers, therefore one should strive to recite the 'Sutra of the Three Heaps' and so on. The faults of downfall are: the downfall of the Bodhisattva vows will cause all previously accumulated roots of virtue to be reduced to ashes, becoming a failure, falling from the place of happiness of gods and humans of the Great Vehicle, falling into the lower realms. Wandering in samsara for a long time, separated from virtuous friends.' Here it only mentions wandering for a long time, therefore it can be determined that one will not abandon the aspiration. If one abandons the aspiration, the 'Skillful Means Sutra' says: 'If one does not abandon the intention of the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, one cannot attain Buddhahood.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
