One should abide in a solitary place. This arises from the root of compassion. After that, one should abide in the path of subjugation, which is the culmination of skillful means. The path of subjugation is vast, as the conduct of the Mahayana is limitless. However, in brief, there are two: the accumulation of merit and the accumulation of wisdom. Among these, the accumulation of merit is threefold: generosity, discipline, and patience. The accumulation of wisdom is twofold: meditation and wisdom. As it is said: 'The cause of merit is threefold: satisfaction, freedom from defilement, and knowing its nature. Single-pointed mind is the cause of wisdom, thus spoke the Lion of Speech.' Diligence is the companion of both. As the glorious Chandra Kirti (Dpal Zla 'Od gZhon Nu) stated in the Ornament of Precious Liberation. This establishment of the three aspects of discipline is primarily presented from the perspective of vast conduct. In the Compendium of Trainings (gzhung bslab btus), a text on profound view, it says: 'Places where one does not fall into transgression, here one should know these places. One's own body and possessions, and the virtues born in the three times, giving them to all sentient beings, protecting them, purifying them, and increasing them.' This extensively shows the state of a beginner. The agreement between the two is that by generating a mind of emptiness with compassion as its essence, at the time of the path, the Bodhisattva first performs all actions of compassion, and then later purifies them with wisdom. Therefore, compassion is what accomplishes, and wisdom is what purifies. Compassion is counted as the accumulation of merit because all actions are done for the sake of sentient beings. Wisdom is for the sake of enlightenment, so it is the accumulation of wisdom. Therefore, abiding in compassion that grasps conventional truth and wisdom that grasps ultimate truth, with one helping the other, one enters and accomplishes simultaneously, like an illusion. Similarly, at the time of fruition, one attains perfect enlightenment through wisdom, and turns the wheel of Dharma through compassion, and so forth, performing actions for the benefit of others. Third, in brief, it includes equality of self and others, and cherishing others more than oneself, which are the two aspects of exchanging self and others. Some say: 'The Bodhicitta of exchange should not be meditated upon.' The source of this statement is that Jigten Sumgon (Kyobpa Jigten Sumgon) considered that there might be faults in exchanging self and others. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is said that clinging to 'staying here' is actually holding onto an extreme of existence. This is similar to the situation where a beginner in the Bodhisattva path claims to have accomplished something that is impossible, which is considered a downfall. 'Is the Bodhicitta (mind of enlightenment) that exchanges self and others good or bad? It needs to be discerned,' etc., seems to have acknowledged that all faults arise from not exchanging self and others. If one wants to point out faults, there needs to be a reason that can prevent holding onto the extreme of existence, and if such a reason exists, it seems feasible. Although such key points of learning are brief, in detail, as the tradition of the two great chariots says, the Prajnaparamita (Perfection of Wisdom) is explained explicitly, and as it is said in the treatises that explain it implicitly. Next, the situations that lead to deviating from the right path are discussed. In the Bodhisattva-bhumi (Stages of a Bodhisattva), four types are mentioned. These are also quoted in the Compendium of Trainings, namely: Due to excessive attachment to gain and respect, praising oneself and disparaging others; being stingy and not giving wealth and Dharma; harming others due to anger, even after taming it, one cannot stop; and pretending to be a practitioner of Dharma through hypocrisy and deception. Although one commits a root downfall as soon as one starts doing it, it is not a Parajika (defeat), because this refers to acting with great affliction, and great affliction only occurs in a state of carelessness. There are forty-six branch downfalls, namely: not making offerings; accepting desires; not respecting elders, etc.; not answering questions; not going to invitations; not accepting gold, etc., that others offer; not giving Dharma to those who want it; abandoning those who break their vows, etc.; not studying for the sake of faith; living in a place full of filth; not doing compassion; making a living through wrong livelihood; being arrogant; speaking words that turn away from Nirvana; using disrespectful language; abandoning actions that bring benefit; Replying with harsh words; abandoning due to anger; picking up anger again; gathering followers for the sake of greed; not eliminating laziness; being attached to noisy talk; not accepting advice; accepting obscurations; looking at the taste of meditation; abandoning the Hearer's Vehicle; and that vehicle; for non-Buddhists, without striving in the Great Vehicle, striving in their Dharma; liking the Dharma of non-Buddhists; slandering the Great Vehicle; praising oneself and disparaging others; not acting for the sake of Dharma; being disrespectful to the speaker of Dharma. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
