If, for the time being, Bodhicitta of the Madhyamaka tradition is given, then, as stated in the 'Compendium of Trainings': 'The giver abandons the Hearer's Vehicle and engages here,' thus incurring a root downfall. Therefore, not everyone is suitable for Bodhicitta of the Madhyamaka tradition, nor is it necessary. Generating Bodhicitta with deceit and trickery also shows that it is not certain to be regarded as a cause for Buddhahood, but depends on conditions. This is also shown in the teachings of the 'Extensive Conduct Sutra,' such as generating Bodhicitta through the power of friends, etc. Nagarjuna also proclaimed the ritual for taking the ultimate Bodhicitta, and it is very clear in the teachings of the 'Manifestation of Enlightenment Sutra,' so denying it is unreasonable. According to the teacher's view, Simhabhadra says in the 'Great Commentary': 'Through the power of lineage, etc., properly and truly taking the Bodhisattva vows, thereby generating Bodhicitta with the essence of emptiness and compassion.' As mentioned above. After taking it, in order to protect it from being lost, there are two types: Aspirational Bodhicitta and Engaging Bodhicitta. First, Aspirational Bodhicitta includes: not abandoning sentient beings, remembering the benefits of Bodhicitta, accumulating the two accumulations, repeatedly practicing Aspirational Bodhicitta, taking the four white dharmas, and abandoning the four black dharmas. The four white dharmas are: not lying even for the sake of life, treating all sentient beings with pure superior intention, without hypocrisy and deceit, generating respect for Bodhisattvas who have generated Bodhicitta as if they were Buddhas, and praising their qualities in the ten directions, and when guiding certain sentient beings to virtue, guiding them towards unsurpassed perfect complete enlightenment, not towards Hearers and Solitary Realizers. The four black dharmas are: deceiving teachers and worthy recipients of offerings, causing regret to others where there is no cause for regret, speaking harshly with anger to Bodhisattvas who have generated Bodhicitta, and treating all sentient beings with hypocrisy and deceit. Secondly, the trainings of Engaging Bodhicitta include: completely training in the trainings, and explaining the causes of downfall that are contrary to the trainings. First: all the precepts as taught above can be summarized by the three types: the precept of restraint, the precept of accumulating virtuous dharmas, and the precept of benefiting sentient beings. The reason for determining them as three is that they correspond respectively to what is said in the 'Bodhisattva-bhumi': all the actions of a Bodhisattva are contained within these, namely, in this life... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the sake of abiding in bliss, the mind abides; for the sake of fully maturing the Buddha's teachings without weariness of body and mind, and for the sake of fully maturing sentient beings, the Bodhisattva's precepts lie in these. The benefits of the Bodhisattva's precepts also lie in these. The actions of the Bodhisattva's precepts also lie in these. There is nothing higher than this, and nothing more excellent than this. Past Bodhisattvas who desired great Bodhi also trained in this way. Future ones will also train in this way. And those who now abide in the boundless and limitless realms of the ten directions are also training. The first is the individual liberation vow of this Great Vehicle. Even if one previously held the vows of the Lesser Vehicle, upon generating Bodhicitta, one will transform into holding this vow. Regarding how to train, as it is said: 'Due to possessing great compassion, one sees far ahead, therefore even prohibited matters are permitted.' That is to say, if it is for the benefit of others, one may freely engage in all Pratimoksha (individual liberation) precepts. However, for a Bhikshu (Gelong, monk), the Bodhisattva's precepts do not permit engaging in impure conduct. Only after abandoning the signs of a renunciant can one engage in it, as recorded in the 'Entering the Bodhisattva's Way of Life'. Similarly, in the Vajrayana, it is said that one can confer upon a Bhikshu an empowerment higher up through vows. Until one attains realization, if one engages in the basis of the four root downfalls, it is uncertain whether it will benefit others or not. For example, the tyrant Ashoka later transformed into धर्मराज अशोक (Dharmaraja Ashoka, धर्मराज अशोक, Dharmaraja Ashoka, King Ashoka the Righteous). Only after attaining realization is it permissible. In the auto-commentary of 'Entering', seven abandonments are mentioned, and in the 'Bodhisattva Grounds' no more than seven abandonments are taught, therefore the three abandonments of mind depend on the remaining two precepts. Greed is the opposite of skillful means, wrong view is the opposite of wisdom, and harmful intent is the opposite of benefiting sentient beings. Therefore, the precepts of guarding against misdeeds, from taking refuge in the Three Jewels of individual liberation up to Bhikshu, excluding the Upavasatha (one-day vow), all belong to this category. Such a Bhikshu, even upon death, will not abandon the seven abandonments. Even if the name 'Bhikshu' is abandoned, since the Sangha and individuals rely on him, there is no need to guard the precepts. For example, like the teachers Saraha and Birwapa who entered into ascetic practices. The second point is that Jo bo (Atisha,尊者) said: 'Therefore, the person who first generates the mind should abide in non-practice.' As it is said: 'The cause of omniscience is Bodhicitta.' After that, one should make it stable and moist, which is great compassion. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
