The three types of Bodhicitta (sems bskyed gsum): Arhat (dgra bcom), Pratyekabuddha (rang rgyal), and Buddha (sangs rgyas). Regarding 'generating the mind of enlightenment,' in some Sutras of the Shravaka vehicle, some generate the mind to attain Shravaka Bodhi, some generate the mind to attain Pratyekabuddha Bodhi, and some generate the mind to attain perfect and complete Buddha Bodhi. This seems to be well-considered. However, if one thinks that they want to attain perfect and complete Buddhahood, then such an explanation is extremely unreasonable. If one thinks, 'May I realize perfect enlightenment,' then that itself is the aspiration Bodhicitta of the Mahayana, as both traditions explain. In the *Compendium of Determinations* it says: 'There are two types of generating the mind of enlightenment: non-distinctive and distinctive. Among them, the non-distinctive is: 'Alas! May I realize unsurpassed perfect enlightenment.' The *Compendium of Trainings* also says: 'Aspiration Bodhicitta is born from the aspiration to become a Buddha.' The *Heroic Progress Sutra* says: 'Even generating the mind of enlightenment hypocritically is said to be a cause for Buddhahood, let alone generating the mind after doing some virtuous deeds?' These Sutras also say in their respective Vinayas: 'Those who generate the mind to become Buddhas will be prophesied to become Buddhas, and will not be prophesied to become Shravakas.' In terms of classification, from the perspective of essence, there are two types: aspiration Bodhicitta and action Bodhicitta: 'Bodhicitta, in brief, should be known as two types: aspiration Bodhicitta and action Bodhicitta.' The Sutra says this. The difference between the two is: 'Just as wanting to go and going, one should know the difference sequentially, likewise, the wise should know the difference between these two sequentially.' Like wanting to embark on the path is aspiration Bodhicitta, while actually embarking on the path is action Bodhicitta. Therefore, the Tibetan spiritual friends say that these two are respectively the state of not being and being embraced by a friend of learning. So, how does aspiration Bodhicitta become an antidote to those faults? The initial generation of the mind, in the *Bodhisattva Grounds*, says: 'It is incompatible with acting negatively with body, speech, and mind towards all sentient beings.' This mind is generated for the sake of benefiting all sentient beings, and if one does not prevent doing things that are not beneficial to sentient beings, then no one can achieve the goal of benefiting sentient beings. In terms of the way of explanation, there are two traditions of the great chariots: the tradition of vast conduct and the tradition of profound view. The reason for the emergence of these two traditions is: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

O Bos (name of a person). Regarding this, practitioners are temporarily divided into two types: those who are inclined towards the profound and those who are inclined towards the vast. As it is said: 'Abiding in two kinds of conduct, one enters the supreme vehicle.' What is the case with those who are inclined towards the profound? They accomplish the fruit through conduct that is solely devoted to the truth, that is, they accomplish it through a mind that is focused on emptiness. Those who are inclined towards the vast are of two types: those who are inclined towards a vast mind and those who are inclined towards vast conduct. What is the inclination towards a vast mind like? It is the aspiration to liberate all sentient beings from the river of afflictions, which is actually the mind of enlightenment (Bodhicitta). What is the inclination towards vast conduct like? For that purpose, they engage in various stainless activities, which is actually the engaging mind of enlightenment (Bodhicitta). Therefore, there is inclination towards the essence of the ultimate truth and inclination towards the vast, illusory appearance of conventional truth. The two ways of explaining the Prajnaparamita (Perfection of Wisdom) should also be understood from such reasons. Regarding the great chariot of explaining it, the Buddha himself prophesied: 'Four hundred years after my Nirvana, there will be a monk named Glorious Great Fame, whose name will be Naga (Dragon), and he will destroy the factions of existence and non-existence.' This is a prophecy about establishing the tradition of profound view. 'Nine hundred years after my Nirvana, there will be a monk named Asanga, who will distinguish the definitive and interpretable meanings of the Sutras in many ways.' This is a prophecy about establishing the tradition of vast conduct. Others call the former the Madhyamaka (Middle Way) school and the latter the Cittamatra (Mind-Only) school. Although the latter composed many texts of the Cittamatra school, that was within the scope of discipline. Actually, it is the Madhyamaka, among which is the illusory Madhyamaka, and the two noble lions (Singhabhadra) are also like that. It should be known that initially showing the path of illusory conventional truth is vast, while showing the meaning of the essence is concise and profound, so it is shown later. This is different from other intentions of explanation. Regarding the method of how to accept it: 'Since the views of these two are different, the rituals are also different.' This proves that since the views are different, the rituals are also different. This is not appropriate. If it were appropriate, then now one wants to become a Mahayana monk, but wants to adopt the ritual of the Shravakas (Hearers), which is contradictory. If one thinks that the two traditions differ in the way of generating Bodhicitta, then 6-479 6-480 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
