The Collected Teachings of the Omniscient Pema Karpo, PK37, entitled 'Showing the Essence of the Three Vows'. 'Showing the Essence of the Three Vows' The Pratimoksha Vow 'Showing the Essence of the Three Vows' Homage to the Guru and Jampelyang (Mañjuśrī). Worthy to take with the fingertips of hearing, the essence of nectar, Again and again giving to the friend of all joys, The master of Dharma, like an ocean, humbling pride, To that wish-fulfilling tree, I bow. The flower of scripture that arises from it, The fragrance of the three trainings expands and enters there, In the center of the mandala endowed with the six legs of the upholders of the teachings, I also prostrate with reverence. Like the spotless rabbit on the precious moon, Like the king of swans on the lotus pond, My devotion inclines towards them, May I be the messenger connecting all and them. Here, for those who enter the tradition of the son of Śuddhodana (zass gtsang sras, father of Siddhartha), the discipline included with it is threefold: The Pratimoksha Vow, the Bodhisattva Vow, and the Vidyadhara Vow. These three, Jowo Je Atisha (jo bo lha cig, Lord Atisha) also said: 'The first vow is to follow the Arhats; the intermediate vow is to follow the previous Bodhisattvas; the mantra vow is to follow the Buddhas.' For reasons such as this, it is proclaimed as the Vinaya of the Shravakas, Bodhisattvas, and Tathagatas. First, the characteristic of the Pratimoksha Vow is: the discipline that abandons only the misdeeds of body and speech. The misdeeds of body and speech are the faults of body and speech among the ten non-virtuous actions. The word 'only' indicates that it does not abandon the thoughts of the mind, and it is for the purpose of distinguishing it from the vows of meditation and the uncontaminated. 'Abandoning' is the name of the antidote, as it is said in the scripture, 'washing with the water of the antidote'. For example, just as a harmful stream of water, if restrained by a dam, will not become harmful, similarly, by blocking the cause of misdeeds with an antidote, one does not allow that misdeed to be committed. It is not abandoned because it is not permissible to do it, But just as one must abandon a Dharma garment from which a tear has occurred because it is not permissible to mend it, but one does not want to abandon it. Therefore, in the ritual it is also said: 'Abandoned by body and speech, but returned again by the mind.' This cuts off the intermediate discipline. Discipline is the meaning of well-practiced.

Just as I announce 'Do not do such things,' and they cannot disobey, that is called law. Similarly, this is also the command of the Dharma King, so it is also called law. Not attaching the characteristic of 'necessarily arising' is to show that all vows of fear protection and good wishes are only intermediate states. As the scripture says, 'All vows have it, but those who have not taken refuge do not.' This is in consideration of the Pratimoksha and other scriptures. Whether high or low, it can be accepted, because liberation must be achieved from taking refuge. This is also included in the desire realm. Classification: According to the classification of the basis, there are Bhikshus and Bhikshunis, Shramaneras and Shramanerikas, Upasakas and Upasikas, and the eight precepts, which are called the eight Pratimokshas. According to the classification of nature, there are four entities, namely Bhikshu, Shramanera, Upasaka, and the eight precepts. Shramanerika is included in Shramanera, and some consider it an intermediate state, which contradicts the scriptures. According to the classification of how they are taken, there are 'as long as life' and 'one day and one night.' The pure precepts of a Bhikshu are the vows with seven abandonments. The seven abandonments are: bodily impure conduct, not giving and taking, killing, verbal lying, harsh words, divisive words, and idle talk. All precepts related to natural transgressions are their power, part, or remainder, so they are included therein. What is not included is indicated by 'with retinue,' that is, the individual precepts. Therefore, this abandons all five categories of transgressions mentioned in the scriptures, so it is 'all.' The Light Sutra says that those below Bhikshuni only abandon similar bodily actions and verbal lying, so it is 'four abandonments.' Considering the precepts, the ten precepts of Shramanera, the five precepts of Upasaka, and the eight precepts of the eight precepts, etc., therefore the scripture says: 'From abandoning five, eight, ten, and all.' The ritual from which these precepts are obtained must also have five assemblies, from the complete precepts to the completion of 'Bhikshu, come well,' no matter what happens, the complete ordination through request and four karmas can only be performed by the Sangha, and these two depend on the preceptor and the teacher. One is previously established, so it is the 'previous ritual.' The other is allowed later, and it is acceptable even now, so it is the 'present ritual.' After it is established, the previous ritual cannot be done. That is, when taking complete ordination now, one needs the Buddha, Dharma, Sangha, preceptor, teacher, one who wants to take complete ordination, pure requisites, and a request. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
