‘I am the manifest.’ Therefore, one must have ten complete manifest qualities. ‘Its karma’ refers to the karma of the four karmas. This is the last part of the third proclamation. This karma is also divided into three types: the statement of the essence, the statement of the action, and the statement of the agent. Here, it refers to the statement of the agent. When the word ‘for this’ is heard, the vows arise. If at that time one thinks, ‘I will not take the vows,’ then it is offered because one wants to take the vows. If at this time one becomes a *maning* (referring to someone who has lost their sexual ability), then the basis will be damaged. Because these two situations do not give rise to vows, if one offers or damages at the time of arising, the vows will not arise.’ This refers to a sudden obstacle. The other three are the preparatory rituals for taking refuge, referring to the statement of others in the third answer. When the word ‘novice monk’ appears, just as a novice monk arises, the remaining two are also explained in the same way. The first moment of the vows, because one has just been liberated from sins, is individual liberation, both the vows of individual liberation and the individual liberation vows. From the second moment onwards, it is not like that, so it is not individual liberation, but the individual liberation vows. Like the first moment of an intermediate renunciate who has not performed the preliminary rituals is individual liberation, not individual liberation vows, and from the second moment onwards, neither is. These rituals of novice monks, etc., are not included in the hundred and one karmas, which are the differences between the single white karma, double white karma, and four karmas of a *bhikshu* alone. Intermediate renunciation is intermediate virtue, but not vows. Taking vows is also in the manner of taking refuge as a preparatory ritual. When taking vows in this way, ‘Corrupted vows are unwholesome form, abandoning it is two kinds of vows.’ Therefore, in the first moment, two types of forms arise: manifest form and non-manifest form. From then on, until the duration of existence, only non-manifest form arises. Because the language of the ritual and the actions of the *sangha* are manifest form, they are called manifest form. It is not like this, ‘Distraction and mindlessness, the accompaniment of good and non-good, taking the four elements as the cause, that is not called manifest form.’ The manifest form of the vows, the shape arising from the body, the sound arising from the speech. The first moment, just as the continuum possesses substance until the vows are abandoned, all that gradually passes, and also every moment of arising and ceasing from the moment of obtaining the vows until the duration of existence, is connected with it, thereby establishing it. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is because the Sarvāstivāda (Sanskrit: Sarvāstivāda, सर्वास्तिवाद, sarvāstivāda, the doctrine of everything exists) believes that the three times (past, present, and future) are real. The proper attainment of Prātimokṣa vows (Sanskrit: Prātimokṣa, प्रातिमोक्ष, prātimokṣa, prevention, protection), from the first moment to the end of its existence, the number is the same. It is like a person with a burden of vows, and the attainment is like a rope to bind the vows. Attainment is non-associated formations (Sanskrit: visaṃprayukta-saṃskāra, विसप्रयोगत-संस्कार, visaṃprayukta-saṃskāra, non-associated formations), which is a designation for obtaining and possessing. For the continuum of three parts in order, the first two parts are different entities, and learning them is not contradictory, so it is sufficient to be a Bhikṣu (Sanskrit: bhikṣu, भिक्षु, bhikṣu, mendicant). These differences are not contradictory. Even if the first two are not abandoned beforehand, the continuum can possess both through the repayment of kindness. If a Bhikṣu needs to renounce, then a Bhikṣu who is already a Śrāmaṇera (Sanskrit: śrāmaṇera, श्रमण, śrāmaṇera, novice monk) does not need to take vows again. This is the view of the Sarvāstivāda. The Sautrāntika (Sanskrit: Sautrāntika, सौत्रान्तिक, sautrāntika, those who rely on the sutras) believes that the nature of the vows is the complete transformation of the mindstream, like the continuation from the cessation of the first moment of consciousness to the second moment. Other schools are also divided into many sects, and I do not know how they are proclaimed in their respective scriptures. The Vijñānavāda (Sanskrit: Vijñānavāda, विज्ञानवाद, vijñānavāda, the doctrine of consciousness-only) believes that the vows are the mental factor of intention (Sanskrit: cetanā, चेतना, cetanā, volition, intention). How to protect the vows? Just like cherishing one's own eyes, harm to the eyes should be avoided by various means; what is beneficial should be diligently accomplished; and what is neither harmful nor beneficial should be treated with equanimity. Similarly, for the precious vows, those actions that lead to downfall should be avoided; those actions that help the vows to increase, expand, or purify should be accepted. Other actions should be treated with equanimity. These are the precepts of prohibition and the precepts of accomplishment. Although divided into three: prohibition, accomplishment, and permission, permission can be understood through the context of the first two. When taking vows, the Ācārya (Sanskrit: ācārya, आचार्य, ācārya, teacher) only teaches a general outline of the precepts. In order to understand them well, one should ask the Upādhyāya (Sanskrit: upādhyāya, उपाध्याय, upādhyāya, preceptor) himself, or another Bhikṣu suitable to be an Upādhyāya, and inquire about those aspects that guide and cultivate. Asking about the conduct of the Guru and disciple will prevent faults from occurring and will lead to perfection. Learning well there, possessing the final five qualities, and examining oneself which actions will lead to downfall and which will not, is sufficient. Therefore, the initial method of protecting the vows lies in this. 'Place' refers to reliance or dependence. Protecting the vows by recognizing the opposing factors includes what has already occurred. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
