When asked 'Where are you going?', he gladly gave his advice. Then, Yar Tsang and Nyang Tsang invited him to stay in Kharor, and made lavish offerings and sacrifices. Many who sought the Dharma received his teachings, and all realized the nature of their minds, and the wisdom of realization was opened. At that time, the almsmen were fighting among themselves, and when he heard that they were killing each other, he thought: 'The twelve virtues of living on alms, etc., have disappeared. Now it has reached the dregs of the five hundred ages.' Then he said: 'In the dregs of the five hundred ages, happiness and suffering and bad words prevail, if I can get food and clothing, I will sing a song for the almsmen.' 'In summer, it is wet with rain, in winter, it is frozen with cold, practice disappears into the vastness of the sky, alas for the wanderer!' He spoke these words with a sad heart. Then, when he arrived at Klongdol, the Gyawa bandits robbed the merchants of Dowoba. In response, the Dowoba army gathered at Nyemo Gyawa, preparing to wage a bloody war. When the Jetsun heard of this, he quickly led some disciples to the army and gave orders. They accepted the order and pacified the war. At that time, he sang a long war song. Later, on one occasion, the Jetsun said: 'Disciples, come to me!' When they had gathered, he said to the assembly: 'I have to go north because of some auspicious connections.' So he prepared his belongings, and the master and disciples set out on their journey, arriving at Zhalu. They circumambulated Jowo Thukje Chenpo (Avalokiteśvara), and stayed there. Some teachers and geshes asked: 'What is the root of the Dharma? What kind of instructions should be practiced? What is the confidence of the view?' He replied: 'The root of white Dharma is faith, remember death. The root of diligence is compassion, even if there is danger, jump into the cliff.' Through these words, they gained faith and became his disciples. Then, they proceeded further and inspected the thirteen salt lakes of the north. When he arrived at the summit of Nyenchen Thanglha (Gnyan chen thang lha, Mount Nyenchen Tanglha) and resided there, one night in his dream, by the irrigation ditch of Chu Phar Ka, the venerable Tsalpa Chenpo (Tshal pa chen po, Tsalpa Master), radiant and with a joyful smile, came to him, giving him many beneficial instructions, and speaking many Dharmas that he had never heard before. When he awoke, he remembered all that the lama had said. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Marpa Rinpoche sang the ‘Song of Unfetteredness.’ Then he said, ‘Now I am going to the shores of Namtso Lake.’ So, he and some disciples prepared to depart. At that time, they faced a vast plain that was difficult for the eyes to bear. The mountains in front looked like demons fleeing, and the mountains behind looked like angry Mongols. A fierce wind blew from their chests, and for many days, they could not find even a drop of water. They became very tired. When they arrived at the camp by Namtso Lake, the gods and demons residing there brought countless offerings to greet them, and they entertained them, allowing them to rest there for a while. There, they ripened and liberated the local guardian deities. Afterward, as they prepared to depart to the north, armies of non-humans followed behind them, giving great respect and escort. The master sang a farewell song as a parting gift. After traveling for a long time, one evening near Mapang Yumtso Lake, they were exhausted from the long journey, and their food consisted of only a few herbs. A disgusting black wind blew fiercely, and the daylight was fading on the top of the western mountains. The Rakshasa woman was rapidly approaching with a terrifying demeanor. Wolves and foxes and other animals emitted miserable howls. Although they were extremely thirsty, they could not find even a drop of dew on the grass. The attendants felt very discouraged. However, Marpa Rinpoche remained unwavering, nourished by meditation, and his body radiated light. At this time, the lord of the earth manifested as a boy and said, ‘Venerable Lama and disciples, please come this way.’ They followed the boy and came to an oasis covered with green grass and red and white flowers, surrounded by beautiful trees. In the center of the oasis, there was a stream of divine nectar, which was manifested by the inhabitants of the underworld. The disciples were very happy and rested there for a while, and they sang songs. Afterward, as they prepared to return, Marpa Rinpoche said: ‘In general, great practitioners should not be too attached to wealth and offerings. In particular, if one practices in order to seek wealth, it will be a reversal of cause and effect. More importantly, this time we are returning from the north to Tibet, and we should not carry any possessions. Check the containers of the practitioners.’ When they checked the containers, they found a Kradpa in the container of a yogi. Marpa Rinpoche said, ‘Throw it away.’ So they threw it away. Afterward, they stayed in a place in the north for about three years and then returned to Tibet. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
