Also, they are earth, fire, and wind, etc. These are their forms, etc. Thus, it cannot be determined, and it is vowed that they are the objects of the eye and touch. For example, it cannot be said that a different arbor is produced from reeds, or a different cloth from threads, because they and they themselves exist in such a way that they obtain the names of this and that. Regarding atoms, in the commentary on the Abhidharmakośa it is said: 'What is an atom? It is that which can be accumulated.' Then, do atoms touch each other or not? The Kashmiris say: 'They do not touch.' Why? If everything were to touch, then substances would become connected. If they touch from one direction, then it would follow that they have parts, but all atoms are without parts.' The meaning is that the indivisible atom and the accumulated atom with parts, these two, the indivisible is not an object of sensory consciousness, it arises from the accumulated atoms, and then it can become an object of sensory consciousness. Regarding this, in the commentary on the Abhidharmakośa it is said: 'In the middle of them, that which has no space at all, that itself is the accumulation.' Or, aggregates are cognized because they have parts.' Because various shapes are formed from the aggregates, it is called coarse. The Sautrāntikas believe that the substance that appears as a lump is an accumulation of atoms, and the atoms that form the lump are considered to have six directional parts, therefore they do not acknowledge indivisible atoms other than accumulated atoms. The atom is also considered to have the form of color. In the difference of the collection of color atoms, various shapes appear. Other than that, other shape substances are not acknowledged. In the commentary on the Abhidharmakośa it is said: 'The Sautrāntikas say that shape is not a substance, but mostly appears in one direction, and is called long. In relation to that, appearing in small amounts is called short. If all are equal, it is called flat, and everything is the same as that.' And, whatever form with obstruction exists, it undoubtedly exists in the atom.' Both schools agree that the accumulated atom does not have sound and senses, therefore it produces an atom with eight substances. The eight substances are the four elements and the four derived from the elements. If there is no sound but there are senses, then there are nine or ten. The body sense is a sense --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If there is nothing else, then what does it possess, such as eyes, etc.? If accompanied by sound, then in order, it is born with nine, ten, and eleven (sensory abilities). Although the Vaibhashikas (a Buddhist school) consider conditioned phenomena to be impermanent, they do not perish in the moment of their existence, but believe that they perish afterward. As the Abhidharmakosabhasyam states: 'Because it is fully grasped by existence, the moment a dharma arises, it does not perish. If it is allowed to vanish, then it will certainly not exist, and this is its destruction.' The destruction of the world, etc., is considered to be at the end of the moment of the completion of the action. The Sautrantikas (a Buddhist school) define the moment as the characteristic of impermanence, and the meaning of the moment is that it perishes immediately after it arises. Therefore, they believe that the destruction of phenomena does not require other causes, but that they themselves have the nature of destruction. The Abhidharmakosabhasyam describes their view: 'In each moment, arising from non-arising is birth, disappearing after arising is death, the continuous connection of the previous moment with the next moment is existence, and its dissimilarity is the change of existence.' As mentioned above, among the three: birth, death, and existence, existence is continuous. Because arising and ceasing exist on the same basis, there is no interval between the two. The 'dissimilarity' mentioned here refers to 'similarity and dissimilarity are external,' where 'dissimilarity' refers to the self-characteristic. And 'similarity' is stated in the commentary: 'Conditioned phenomena, even if there are great differences and changes, appear to be the same.' This refers to the general characteristic. Regardless of the arising and impermanence of a sprout, the arising of a sprout is a nominal existence, so it is a general characteristic. Its impermanence is also the same. Similarly, for the five aggregates of grasping, it is nominally established as a person or being, which is a nominal existence relative to it, but a being does not become a nominal existence, just like the function of a bulging belly, limping feet, and carrying water, a pot is a nominal existence, but a pot is considered impermanent. Everything can be explained in this way. Therefore, the self-characteristic of meaning is the state in which the dharma itself exists, which is not the realm of sound. From the entity of meaning arises the general characteristic of meaning, from which arises the general characteristic of sound, and then appear signs, symbols, and names. At the stage of symbols and names, there are forms of collections of letters, collections of names, and collections of sentences. Relying on the collection of causes and conditions, sound appears as its own characteristic, thereby obtaining the name 'sound.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
