Just as non-existence, the basis of imputation, such as the nature of form, like bubbles and foam, is explained sequentially for the five skandhas (aggregates), therefore, understanding that all skandhas and realms are merely illusions, and showing their exhaustion. Here (in the 'Fundamental Wisdom of the Middle Way'), 'The characteristics of the distinctions of the skandhas, all natures are exhausted, those are not those, and are without self-nature.' Thus, the Shravakas (listeners) combine the two, believing that exhaustion is emptiness, but they do not desire the emptiness of no-birth. In 'Entering the Bodhisattva's Way', 'The world sees things, and also considers them to be true, not like illusions, therefore, the world and the yogis argue.' Thus, the difference between the world's true view and the assertions of philosophical schools lies in this. The Yogachara (practice of yoga) believes that external objects such as form do not exist, but only the appearance of consciousness itself. Therefore, consciousness also has two aspects: the grasped and the grasper. The various assertions of self and the establishment of various dharmas (phenomena) that arise from worldly customs and scriptures are all functions of consciousness alone. They are not established on what truly exists, but from beginningless time, the force of the habits of discriminating self and dharmas such as form, which are imprinted in the Alaya-vijnana (storehouse consciousness), is strong, so self and dharmas appear from the Alaya-vijnana, and thus discrimination arises, so there is no external object. 'Oh sons of the Buddhas, these three realms are only mind.' Thus it is said. Consciousness is spoken of as eight consciousnesses, namely the previous six plus the afflicted mind and the Alaya-vijnana. The four afflictions of the afflicted mind are: ignorance of self, view of self, pride of self, and attachment to self. The Alaya-vijnana is the basis of seeds. All knowable things can be summarized into three natures: parikalpita (imputed nature), paratantra (dependent nature), and parinispanna (perfected nature). The Vijnanavada (consciousness-only school) believes that the paratantra is truly existent, and that all minds and mental factors belong to the paratantra. The parinispanna is the ultimate truth, divided into two types: unchanging parinispanna and non-inverted parinispanna. The path truth is the former, and the cessation truth is the latter. All others are parikalpita, which are falsely established. The Vijnanavada believes that all phenomena that have not been examined are paratantra, like illusions. If they are examined, then the two aspects of the grasped and the grasper on them are parikalpita, because they do not exist at all. And the remaining essence is the nature of reality, which is the parinispanna. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Therefore, (they believe) that everything else is empty of the parikalpita (imputed nature), while the parinispanna (perfected nature) is not empty of its own nature, so this is a 'gzhan stong' (other-empty) Madhyamaka. They proclaim this view loudly. This view is elaborated in the two treatises of Maitreya. Even here (in the Madhyamakalamkara), it says: 'From the aspects of grasper and grasped, there is no other entity. Therefore, because the entity is empty, the absence of svabhava (own-being) is thoroughly proclaimed.' And 'Therefore, whatever is empty of both, that is its very nature.' That is the meaning. According to this view, for things like form, there are three: the parikalpita form is the paratantra (dependent nature); if analyzed, both the aspect of the grasped and the aspect of the grasper are the parikalpita form; 1-717 The entity is the dharmata (nature of reality) form, which is the parinispanna. This method applies to all things. To this, the Madhyamikas argue that the statement 'external objects do not exist, only mind appears as real' is also unreasonable. Why? Because if the object itself is the nature of consciousness, then the object would also become conscious. Or, the mind would become material. Or, form would become invisible like the mind. Or, if external objects do not exist, and only mind appears as the object, then everything should appear as the object in the way we think and expect. Or, if form can be broken down into particles, and the particles can be broken down into smaller parts until they disappear, then the mind should also disappear. Therefore, the statement 'mind appears as the object' is unreasonable. If it is said that 'from beginningless time, due to the maturation of the habit of clinging to form, it appears that way,' then if the object does not exist at all, there would be no clinging to the object, and therefore there would be no such habit. The Dasabhumika Sutra says 'the three realms are only mind,' which is to negate the agent and the enjoyer. 1-718 The same sutra says, 'From dependent origination, thoroughly understanding the ten aspects, namely, no self, no clinging, no person, no self-nature, no agent of self-nature, no enjoyer, the door of liberation of emptiness will arise.' The Lankavatara Sutra says: 'External objects do not exist, only mind appears that way.' This is also to negate the view that things exist in ultimate truth, and to benefit the taming of beings by proclaiming only mind. When one refutes oneself, in general, things are dependently originated, so in conventional truth they are like illusions. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
